Outstanding! I try to teach my kids that they live surrounded by heroes and that is why 'Yes, Mam and Yes, Sir"
are the only appropriate responses or acknowledgements for their elders and betters. Especially those in their seventies and eighties who survived childhood in the Depression,CCC camps, WWII, the fight for the eight hour day and collective bargaining, the hell of Korea, the loss of sons and daughters in Vietnam, and new Century. God Bless them all!

Yes...the story is true.
....and she really was my neighbor (next block over)....or maybe it was that I was HER neighbor.
I've been lucky in my life....I've met a lot of really interesting people....or maybe it's just I've noticed.

I can just see it now....sometime today, I'm going to get some chocolate chip cookies and lemonade and sit wondering in awe about the character of a woman who volunteers to go into a war zone as a combat nurse.
Heroes are what we know we ought to be, they make us wonder what we can be, and they bring us to summon the best from ourselves.

OMG, as I wipe away a tear, what a beautiful story! I make chocolate chip cookies for my son, his favs, and I can't wait to share this story with him, and a plate of cookies! I think that will be a new tradition around here, choco chip cookies for Memorial day. And saying 'Thank you' to the heroes around us.
Two close to us are gone now. Memorial day is just a little sadder now that 2 of WWII's hero-survivors who lived in our neighborhood have passed on. One landed in Normandy and one was already on the ground there in France. It was tradition for many years for George and Jerry to regale us with tales of their WWII experience at a neighborhood Mem Day cookout.
To: fortunecookie
Remember George and Jerry's stories.
Pass them on....America will be better for it.
...and don't forget the lemonade with the cookies......(grin)

Mmmm. That sounds yummy. I've never tried them with lemonade! This will be a first.
And we fondly remember them every year. They were remarkable men. George was a lot like George C. Scott in appearance and voice. ;-)
