Villaraigosa's decisive victory immediately places him among the front rank of the nation's Latino political elite.
Can anyone remember the fawning coverage of Mel Martinez winning a senate seat? Surely he and the Attorney General are the most influential, but I don't recall the media liking it very much.

"The bruising runoff between the two Democrats was a rematch of the 2001 election, in which Hahn rallied to defeat Villaraigosa and win his first term. Villaraigosa came back strong this year, nearly ousting Hahn in the March primary."
So, the election was between two so-called Democrats?

Hugh Hewitt liked Villaraigosa, believe it or not. A review is posted on his blog that he sent to the
Los Angeles Times to post on its election blog. They still haven't. Republicans should take heart - he may a pleasant guy exuding confidence and leadership qualities and that's fine for bringing business to L.A. Democrats can hardly do serious harm running a city. But he's an extreme Leftist with politics that side of the moon and he will be beaten by a Republican in 2010 for the same reason Arnold will win re-election next year: the Democrats are too far to the Left to win back the Governorship in a Blue State. Just look at Massachusetts - they've been electing Republican Governors for nearly 20 years!
