IT'S #1 AT THE BOX OFFICE
To: patriciamary
Four new films vied for attention at the box office over the weekend, but there were few sold-out venues, and the top-grossing film, Monster-in-Law, starring Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez, took in only $23.1 million. Kicking & Screaming, starring Will Ferrell, placed second at $20.2 million. The Jet Li martial-arts film Unleashed debuted with $10.9 million to place third, while Renny Harlin's Mindhunters tanked with just $1.9 million, placing tenth. It marked the twelfth consecutive weekend that results came in lower than the comparable week a year ago. The box office is expected to post its best numbers of the year next week following the opening of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

Yeah but has anyone ever been charged?
To: patriciamary
#1 with only $23 mil is actually pretty lame. It just shows what crap is currently showing.

Hi All-
I wouldn't watch that movie even at anti-aircraft gunpoint. Congratulations to Ike Boutwell for a job well done.

I would have had the movie there. Charge $100 to the Hanoi lovers and send the $ to the vets.

considering Kingdom of Heaven opened as top movie the week before with only 20 million , a 23 million opening by the Monster movie is not impressive at all.
J-Lo and Jane Ho are rapidly sliding out the twilight doors of their careers and none too soon.

The e-mail address in this article is the author's. It's not the e-mail address of the theater owner.

"Monster-in-Law" was last weekend's top-grossing movie. Which isn't saying much since most of them are just as crappy as Fonda's movie.

"Boutwell's stance against her latest movie means he's taking a financial hit."
As long as Boutwell is taking the hit (as opposed to shareholders), then more power to him. Welcome to the market ...

Get real. Jane doesn't care because the film payed her the same whether it was a hit or not.
The distributor doesn't care because it's the #1 film in the country. When you're number 1, the execs will point to little guys like Boutwell, giggle at how cute their little protests are and then go back to doing what they were doing.

It's number 1 and it wasn't expensive to make. They're laughing all the way to the bank.

23 mil can be nothing or a lot depending on the movie. Revenge of the Sith cost a fortune to make. It will have to (and it will easily) be a blockbuster just to make a few bucks. These comedies are cheap to make and can be very profitable with middling success, and the success of this one is very well beyond middling.
