I would be delighted if you could make a cogent case to change my mind. I just don't think it is possible. Black Africa simply lacks the ability to fashion a civil society where investment has any long term payoff, and complex economic arrangements. That is why the place is on life support, almost literally. Without food aid, there would be mass starvation.

Islam has been such a wonderful boon for Africa starting with the slave trade.

"Europe had brought corruption and violence to the African continent. "

Especially the French. And it's particularly bad under ChIraq.

**You sound like my ex boyfriend. Are you Rhodesian or South African by any chance? I think when a person has that view there's no use in discussing anything else on the topic at hand.

Two problems with your"uncomfortable facts"theory about Africa under colonialism.
First, colonialism was about enriching the mother country, not to better the lives of Africans.
Two,European colonialism did not arrive in Africa till the 1880's.Africans were around for thousands of years before that, living in small villages AND large cities. How did they survive without the European for all those years?
True,Africa is in bad shape now.But colonialism would be no improvement at all for the average African.

I think Houphouet-Boigny - and a lot of French investment - created a mirage of stability by ruling with an iron fist. When he died...

Culturally, obviously, African societies have a fundamental problem, one related to very low levels of societal trust, as well as excessive superstition. OTOH, they have one advantage over Europe: they're reproducing. I don't think birth rates are the problem. If they were, India and the Asian Tigers would not be where they are today.

Nope. I just call them as I see them, however un-PC or uncomfortable. I favored the end of colonialism. The die was cast on that, and well, societies at some point, have a right to fashion their own hell up to a point, without a "daddy." And that is what is being fashioned - hell, as seen through "Western" eyes.

The population explosion is a horrific problem in black Africa. It is what caused the Rwanda genocide primarily. It will lead to others, ala Sudan, etc. The Asian Tigers have low fertility rates. India's fertility rate is dropping like a rock. One can argue about the cause and effects. That aspect is complex.

Awful goverment not people is what caused Rwanda. Children aren't an inconvience or a horrific problem. That we definately disagree on.

Good for him, it's about time someone shined a little light on the european interference in Africa.

Europe is currupting Africa (exporting marxism, UN currption), but not for the reasons B16 mentions. What he said as reported in this article sounds like a bunch of leftist nonsense.

Read Jared Diamond's book. It was a textbook case of Mathusian collapse. It is repeating itself. The place is awash in children. The fertility rate is something around 6. They will not be able to support themselves. Kenya with so many more advantages, is headed in the same direction.

very interesting! Of course there are talented black leaders but none are ever given credit by the media. Just like Thabo Mbeki has a brother who should be president of South Africa but he fled SA and is in England (I think).
