"proof of Social Security Number"
That I can't prove, I haven't had a card in 53 years, i've never needed it for anything and never in my life have I ever been asked for it. All anyone has ever wanted was to give them the number. I guess they might accept my pilots license since the SS# is the number of your license and it's printed on it but even there they take your word for it and don't ask to see it.
The problem is that drivers licenses are de facto ID cards. They shouldn't be but they are. This little loophole is being used by every criminal and illegal to make themselves legit wherever they go right now. Since drivers licenses are an interstate ID, Congress is the only entity who can deal with this unless we DO want to establish a real national ID. Otherwise, you are looking at chaos from one state being exported to all the others.
Any governor with a mind would consider the cost of issuing legitimate licenses, as being more than saved on costs of illegal aliens.
A card issued by states, following federal guidelines is NOT a "national ID" card.
The existing Social Security card comes very near being a "national ID" card. Obtaining one should require proof of a legal right to be in the US.
Next should be far more stringent requirements for employers to hire only people with a legal right to be in the country, working. What a Green Card is supposed to be.
Bush clearly isn't going to push for anything of real value, but I expect the next president will.
In the meantime, every possible improvement should be welcomed.
I don't really see the state DL testers verifying to see if the SS#/card you present really matches your name with the SS admin.
Those southern chicken plucking companies have a lot of pubbie pols huddled under their wings when it comes to protecting their illegal non-guest workers.
If I understand the law correctly you will still be able to get a driver's license the same way illegals will still be able to get them. If you cannot provide all the documentation then you can get one issued with a different color than the approved national id, but you won't be able to board planes or enter federal buildings with it.
I call a spade a spade; you can call it whatever makes you feel good. A national ID with your state's name on top is still a national ID.
"A national ID with your state's name on top is still a national ID."
Then of course you would agree a federal Social Security card is a National ID card, too?
Since this card is already used for many purposes, wouldn't it make sense to verify that it is only issued to people with a legal right to be in the US?
If we want to seriously deal with illegals - which I fully support - there are many ways to do that, and none of them require a national ID.
