His charisma was due to his power.Wealth,power and physical attractiveness give one a certain amount of charisma,in the eyes of some.

A true Anglo-Saxon perspective would be from Lothrop Stoddard an American who went into Germany in late 1939 early 1940 and interviewed a good many Nazis up the line all the way to Hitler. Needless to say he was glad to leave. The book is called "Into the darkness" named after the blackouts of the lights in wartime Germany.

I think it was CBS that did a two hour dramatized special on Hitler's rise a year or two ago. Many Jewish organizations objected to the special as apparently making him look too good. The actor who played him, however, portrayed him as a tyranical, prissy little man whom no one in his or her right mind would want to follow. My impression was that actor got Hitler all wrong because none of the magnetic quality of his pesonality, testified to by all of his contemporaries, came through. What you say about the old news reels of him is certainly true--he appears to be repulsive. I have this feeeling that, if I understood German, I might be better able to appreciate his personal appeal.

I saw a documentary on Hitler's health recently. It came to the conclusion that, among other things, Hitler suffered from Crohn's disease and was severely flatulent his entire adult life. Kinda makes you wander what that bunker smelled like toward the last days doesn't it?

you also have to look at the state of Germany at the time he originally came to power. Germany was experiencing some rather severe economic dislocation. Hyperinflation was rampant. Several years ago I bought a 50 Million Mark note. When it was printed, it wouldn't have bought a loaf of bread. In dire circumstances, people do insane things.

I used to not be able to understand how people could support his genocidal regime. In the past several years though, I can see how it happened. There are sheep everywhere who will be led anywhere they are told to go.

I have a friend who was a young girl in Germany during Hitler's time. She recalls being selected to give him flowers during one of those endless rallies. She said the thing that she could never forget was his eyes. She said they were blue and hypnotic. I found it interesting that this nurse mentions his eyes.
