SENATE AGREES TO DORGAN REQUEST TO PULL PLUG ON NEVER ENDING INDEPENDENT COUNSEL INVESTIGATION

After 10 years, guilty plea, and presidential pardon Independent Counsel still spending millions

(WASHINGTON, D.C) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan’s effort to end funding for an apparently never-ending Independent Counsel’s investigation that has so far cost taxpayers more than $21 million has been approved by the U.S. Senate. The Independent Counsel was appointed ten years ago, but has failed to file a report and continues to spend millions of dollars, despite the fact that the subject long ago resigned from office, pled guilty to a misdemeanor, paid a $10,000 fine, and received a presidential pardon.

Still, Independent Counsel David Barrett continues on. Dorgan noted. “If the Independent Counsel doesn’t know when to pull the plug on this, then the Congress needs to do it for him. There is no reason to continue spending millions of tax dollars on this.” Dorgan said.”

More than half of the $21 million total cost of the investigation -- $10.6 million – was rung up after the subject – former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros resigned from office and pled guilty. During that time period, no further charges have been filed. In the last six months examined by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), ending September 30, 2004, the investigation tallied more than $1.2 million in new expenses.

“This is just an unbelievable waste of money,” Dorgan said. “For this to be going on, for the meter to still be running for taxpayers on this investigation ten years later, and six years after he pled guilty and paid a fine, and four years after he was pardoned is beyond belief.” Dorgan’s amendment, which was adopted during Senate consideration of the Supplemental Appropriations bill, cuts off further funding for the investigation on June 1, and requires the GAO to provide Congress with a detailed accounting of the Independent Counsel’s expenditures. The bill, with Dorgan’s amendment, was approved Thursday by the Senate.

The "pubbies" have already given in!!! This amendment was already attached to the bill, via unanimous consent request, IOW, there is no roll call vote!!! Which means that ALL GOP senators went along with hiding the results-

oh, and, BTW, this cost us taxpayers $10million dollars!

OOPS--I was wrong on my post--after reading Dorgan's letter, I see it cost $20.1 million, excuse me!!!

However, what will be a waste of money is to spend that much and then not release the darn thing===how stupid does Dorgan think we are, anyway????

I just went back over all of the Roll Call votes of this session of the Senate and there was no roll call vote---so that has to mean that Corcoran and Frist had to go along with attaching this to the freakin' EMERGENCY SUPPLEMENTAL for our troops!!!

Gah---I am really beginning to have hateful feelings about the GOP Senators---the dems I expect to pull this crap, but the GOP is supposed to STOP them, at least that is what I voted for them to do!

Let me know if you need any help in filing it. I don't know anything about how you go about it but I am willing to do what I can anyway that I can. Just let me know!

I'm sick of the COWARDS that we elected!!! THEY ARE ALL A BUNCH OF CROOKS COVERING FOR ONE ANOTHER!!!

Susan McDougal was in a Wal-Mart in our area today walking around like a rock star. She is a CRIMINAL who was pardoned by her former lover, Slick Willie according to Dick Morris. GAG! There is NOTHING that Tom Delay can do to TOP ANYTHING the CLINTONS did and are still doing, all with the blessings of the DEMS and so-called Republicans.

We paid for the damn report so we should be able to see it!

Our Founding Fathers would call us COWARDS and TRAITORS for letting this go on.

And they would recognize that the Senate GOP is COMPROMISED.

This is just a blind guess but could this have anything at all to do with all the FBI files Hillary still has on both sides? Could she have enough to get this done?

I have no idea, but it is unbelieveable that the Republicans would let this amendment get attached to THIS bill on a unanimous consent without any debate or anything.

What are these people thinking, unless it is CYA time!

Sorry, just being sarcastic. But with everything the Clintons have gotton away with, what would make me think anything will come of this?

I don't think that you are being sarcastic, I think that you are being a realist!

I agree with Kerry and the other demoncrat, no more funding for a probe that won't go anywhere. When the latest Clinton bird walked after being caught red-handed and admitted that he stole classified documents from the National Archives, and destroyed some of them, as he was preparing Bill Clinton for his testimony before the 911 commission, I concluded that nothing will stick to these people to give them what they so richly deserve. Jail time..............

Perhaps. But our Founding Fathers did not face an enemy with the subversive skills of modern Communism (now also transferred to a non-Communist Russian regime via being ruled by the KGB.) No one ever faced such an enemy. Modern Communists are the most subversive people in history.

Not trying to diminish the greatness of the Founding Fathers. They faced other great challenges and overcame them.

But the nature of our enemy makes American patriots look weaker than they are. They fight on more fronts and on more levels than any group of people in history.

Unsettlingly scary point. I never thought about it, but what you say must be true. Of course she copied all the files and still has it all.

It would sure be nice if someone could document this fact, but I guess that's a pipe dream.

frankly I suspect both parties have used the IRS to get revenge or silence people

Frankly, - remember 'file gate" - That was a real crime of major proportions - only one in a long list that the clintooones get a pass on. Remember file gate - the illegal request for FBI files - that the FBI illegally granted? - Files on republican personnel and pols?

I'm not alone in remembering that and in wondering if blackmail isn't one of the reasons so many of the pubs have seemed spineless over the years...below is link to one FBI agents report on that:

It's real good reading...but will turn your stomach

We, apparently, have the Dems attempting to cover up IRS abuses and Stalinist attempts to silence and destroy dissenters and whistle-blowers

and don't forget the FBI file gate crimes - blackmail anyone?

These people are frighteningly evil -

No big surprise -

We need to get someone to do a Freedom of Information on the information in the investigation so far - there should be plenty of 'good' stuff -

and we all know now how to get it out the general public. They've been successful for decades in burying everything - thanks to their MSM lackeys - now we have outlets to end-run them all ...
