There may be other threads floating about on this, but they do not include a couple of important points that I think are worthy to bring out.

He was a molester, it is clear of that. He had been arrested in 1991. They do not speak of his criminal record after 91.

Did he do something that warranted all of this activity, or because of events in the past weeks did folks feel they needed to be proactive when it pertains to molesters in their neighborhood.

If in fact that were on witch hunt, and broke the law in the process then they should be accountable. Two wrongs never make a right.

I find it odd, that when he complained to the police there reaction to take him to a mental health facility. He I feel had a valid point to be concerned and from the article tried to have it addressed.

While I personally loath the actions of a molesters or rapist for that matter take no pleasure at all in the death of this man. Especially if he had turned his life around and was never in trouble with the law.

Of course more information is needed, I will re access as info warrants.

I totally agree with you. If he has been on the straight an narrow for almost 15 years, this was a horrible thing to do.

From of the original post: "Just don't get on the bandwagon," she said. "There's going to be other (deaths) if Randy Harris has his way. He hasn't been in trouble for 18 years, and he's branded for life."

18 years is a long time.

And you have no idea the slippery slop this will lead too. Wait until the politically correct lynch crowd gets a hold of these regulations and uses them against US conservatives by falsely accusing us of racist, sexistism and bigotry; and it is YOU who have been branded a bigot for the rest of your life, with signs posted around where you live, listing you as a bigot, with your address and phone.

You are to blind to see the landmines you are creating for conservatives.

These convicted pedophiles need to have a permanent scarlet colored mark tattoed on their forehead if they are released from prison. In fact...all violent criminals released from prison should have a permanent easily identifiable mark on their face as part of their sentence.

Residents in a Ocala neighborhood could face charges after a convicted sex offender apparently committed suicide in despair over signs labeling him a "child rapist" posted in his neighborhood, according to Local 6 News.

Clovis Ivan Claxton, 38, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a child in Washington in 1991, had lived at 3230 SE. 45 Street in Ocala for about two years.

(So, what did the residents do that was not true? Either he is a child molester or he isn't.)

Tuesday, Claxton noticed bright yellow, laminated signs displaying his picture, date of birth, address and the words "child rapist" hanging on power poles in his neighborhood. A county commissioner proposed posting such information in the community but Sheriff Ed Dean rejected the idea.

After seeing the signs, Claxton called the sheriff's office and said that he felt "extremely scared and feels that people in the neighborhood are now out to possibly hurt him."

(Gee, how does he think parents of children feel, knowing he is in their neighborhood?)

It used to be in this country, that if a Man raped a woman and was convicted of such in a court of Law, he was taken out and hung by the neck until dead.

Rapes were rare occurances for that reason in places where there were established courts.

I don't recall ever hearing of a child being molested during those times, but I'm sure they occurred. I cannot imagine however, that they would have suffered anything LESS than a hanging for that same offense.

Much more, I would wager that they probably never would have made it to trial. They probably would have been taken out by the locals and pulled apart and their body parts burned at a crossroads at night.

I have zero sympathy for child molesters and child rapists. In my opinion they get what they deserve. Send them on to the supreme Judge of the Universe and let him decide that persons fate in the afterlife. He has no place among the living.

Florida can't protect children from sexual predators, but they want to protect sexual predators from "signs". What's wrong with this state?

Since they don't glow in the dark... illegal or not, the flyer was an attempt to level the playing field.

The law has been a colossal failure for preteen girls in Florida...

I heard an interview stating the average offender has molested almost 40 times before getting caught!

"Hasn't been in trouble for 18 years" or hasn't been caught?

Don't celebrate the suicide or blame the flyer.

FWIW From the Miami Herald...

Claxton was developmentally disabled and wheelchair-bound after being struck in childhood by meningitis and encephalitis. His parents cared for him, and he lived in an apartment adjoining their neatly kept house in a forested enclave of southern Ocala.

In 1991, when his family was living in Washington state, Claxton was charged with first-degree child molestation over an incident involving a caregiver's 9-year-old daughter. He was 24 at the time but, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, had the mental capacity of a 10- or 12-year-old. He served 27 months in prison.

When his family moved to Florida in 2000, Claxton was listed as a sexual offender on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement website. For reasons still unclear, the FDLE website also indicated that Claxton was charged with the rape of a child, though he had not been. Sheriff's deputies checked in on Claxton and did not consider him a threat but took him into custody at least five times for threatening suicide.

I am saddened to here he killed himself...the fact that he did says that he was a rare one indeed. But to molest a child, you ought to feel grief, he should feel unwanted in his community.
I think the program is working! With proper backing there could be signs in every molesters neighbors yard. But don't worry, most will not kill themselves because of it. I am saddened to report the two children in Georgia are dead, drowned in an algae infested pond.
My dear Lord must look on these senseless killings with such contempt...I wonder when he will say, enough is enough. No more children will be allowed to die at the hands of daemons in our communities.
Weakly and haggardly I say to all of you, no matter what program you become apart of...get involved!
Lets do something in every city to force these ingrates out of general population and in to a "Buccaneer's Den" for the sexual deviants as it was in earlier times. Isolated from our children, Parents, sleep with one eye open and exhaust all efforts to protect your greatest accomplishments from these soul destroyers

The person responsible for the flyers faces up to 1 year in jail.

"Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press"

I'm old enough to remember when that actually meant something.

Harris said sex offenders need to take responsibility for their actions.

THAT is the main point. Too bad our society would rather make the criminal out to be the victim.

And we also know that pedophiles are very often repeat-offenders, sometimes remaining "dormant" for years.

I am sorry, but I would not want a child rapists living in my neighborhood - period.

I think you have fair points FMC.

I have one comment on this to people who want all "sex offenders" dead or in prison: Never, never forget that there are times when upset ex-wives and girlfriends and colleagues can get men convicted because of false or exaggerated testimony.

That is certainly not always true. And way too many real offenders slip through the cracks. But overreaction opens the door for many, many men to be put unnecessarily at risk. Remember, it is not the truth that matters, but the seriousness of the charge. Remember all the daycare scandals.

In my lifetime, I have seen some real scum put away. And I have seen at least three men have their lives virtually ruined, and everything they have built taken away because of the charges.

We need to be thoughtful and vigilant when it comes to this subject, not hysterical.

I think this one requires the wisdom of Solomon to figure out. He was a child molestor, but after 18 years of no signs of repeat offenses does he not have the right not to be threatened? Putting up a sign calling someone a Child Rapist is pretty much an invitation for someone to take a shot at him. On the other hand, he was a child molestor.

The girl he molested was 9 years old. Also, apparently he mentally retarded from a head injury and had to wear leg braces.
