I love it! Bush signs the bill and he's not running again. The Republicans gain the Latino vote. The dem party loses the latino vote and we still get what we want.
People tend to get the government they deserve in the long run. Eventually, those who support the robbing of the public treasury are dismayed to find that the pot is empty and that they in fact are the treasury.
I left California about 15 years ago. The writing was on the wall even then.
"My number one issue for voting is to get more conservative judges in the courts. I wouldn't want to see more circuit courts or the supreme court become like the 9th circuit court in California. The 9th circuit court is loaded with Clinton and Carter selected judges!"
My concerns with the judiciary are more basic. Why should unelected politicians with unlimited tenure have even the same amount of power as the other branches that are subject to election by the people (directly or indirectly)?
"I think it would be hysterical if Senator Byrd (who voted for the marriage amendment) would be the one to introduce it in the Senate and possibly get more Democrats to support it."
He's enough of a curmudgeon to do it. BUT I don't think he would introduce the bill without running it past the Democratic party first. Voting in favor of a bill is one thing, being identified as the initiator of it and taking the lead is quite another. If he does introduce such a bill, that would be a very interesting message. Robert Byrd is a party man.
Thanks for the kind words.
There is a great deal of truth in your words. And I don't know what to say other than I could choose to view the future of politics in the U.S. as being very bleak. As a general rule, I simply choose optimism. But it is that: a choice. I don't claim that it is the more rational choice, simply what works for me.
I love politics. But I would note that I'm finding myself becoming much more drawn to religion of late. The (Christian) message of redemption and how we do not need to be slaves to our past has a particular resonance for me.
Perhaps you should look outside the political sphere?
That's the hard truth. Even those who didn't support it find that they've become the treasury, against their will, i.e., the few conservative voters in California. You left at the right time.
Neither can I...
Just for the record, and actually even more accurate, is the actual quote:
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - Albert Einstein
Thank you for the correction :)

That is a good question.
I think what is getting their attention these days is mass organized call/fax/mail ins.
When their office is deluged with input from invigorated citizens it gets their attention.
When the timing is related to a particular bill and the bill is called out, as opposed to a general position for example, then it has as much effect as you can get, in my opinion.
The old saw of a written letter has more impact has given way to the mass communicaition that is possible with the web.
"I AM NOT ARGUING IN FAVOR OF OPEN BORDERS, just trying to come up with a logical reason as to why we are against shutting them down..."
Because the get massive amounts of support from the US Coc, Vincente Fox is Bush's lodge brother, and the pharmaceutical industry makes a killing by selling pseudoephedrine down there, which then returns to our economy in the form of methamphetamine.
"We are just along for the ride."
I'm not going along for the ride anymore. I'm prepared for something akin to the '60's civil rights marches if need be to get the border back in control.
