Excellent. I used to have floppies with various viruses on it for that purpose. The eicar thing is safer. :-)

There's more than one way to tell if it's running, but probably the easiest way for non-techie would be to visit winpatrol.com, download and install the latest free version of the software (it will install in the taskbar), then click on the little doggy and choose the "Active Services" tab. You should see the active components of the virus software listed, by both program and filename.
You can also easily check if the virus scanner is running at startup by clicking on the "Startup" tab.
It's a very useful little program.
