As head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for many years, he staunchly defended orthodoxy in . . . liturgical translations . . .

Ratzinger has done good work in this regard. I am very pleased that he has been elected Pope over certain Cardinals who would be so presumptuous as to rewrite the New Testament.

Not necessarily - all that I was essentially saying was that you had skin color as the definition of "olive branch", and I suggested that it wasn't necessarily the case.

Sometimes understanding what a prophecy means isn't immediately evident. Sounds like you don't have a high regard for prophecy in general, but I will note that the prophecy we are discussing is extra-Biblical.

My reading of St. Malachy's prophecy on a a Roman Catholic web site didn't have explanations for all of the Popes, either.

What is interesting is that according to the prophecy, Benedict XVI is the second to last Pope.

As far as Malachy's prophecy I take it with a grain of salt and prefer to focus on the clear as opposed to the unclear. "Seek first the Kingdom of God" - Jesus

After two named John Paul, I thought this one might go for George Ringo I.

My thoughts and prayers are with Benedict XVI, hope he continues the good work than John Paul II started.

I wasn't referring only to the skin color. Could have also implied someone from Italy.

You are correct - it is better to focus on the clear than the unclear.

Chris mentioned Cardinal Ratzinger's membership in the Hitler youth without bothering to explain it was compulsory, and a cheap attack on him.

We were just watching the EWTN coverage, and Father Newhouse (a good friend of the new Pope) predicted that you'll hear the words Nazi and "hardliner" slung about by the press in the days to come. Chrissy was just getting a head start. What else is new?

Just one more reason not to pay any attention to the MSM, especially when it comes to religion -- the water of truth just doesn't mix with slimy liberal oil.

Regarding the prohecy and how it relates to olives... Earlier discussions involved the speculation that the next pope may be from the Benedictine Order. I was looking at the possible Cardinals affiliated with the Benedictines. Needless to say I almost fell over when I heard that he chose the name Benedict XVI.

Good point about Italy, and we are in agreement on the rest.
