8 years is too severe.. give him 2-3 years only. Even at 24 he's still young and stupid. What he did was wrong but getting out at 32 is horrible. I also take into account his other two buddies who are problably yuking it up in MEX or CAN sipping martinis... eight years for a non-murder, rape, molestation. Why do the child molestors in in FL get less time?

The owners of the SUVs did nothing to him nor his friends. those SUV's were the property of someone else who makes the car payment every month.
He was not making their car payment. They were working for the money to make those payments of their property.
He had NO RIGHTto do what he did.
Big Fat Americans because they own SUVs?

There are lots of people that I dont' like (guys like him and his friends for instance) but I would never dream of vandalizing their property. That's the difference between them and us.
Well, He did it, he thought it was funny and cool I'm sure and now he learns FINALLY that there ARE INDEED consequences for the actions we choose.

This guy's a "student" in the same sense that Rodney King was a "motorist."

"I want nothing more than to be a physicist," Cottrell said. "I would do anything to earn any leniency the court could show in this matter."

But then you wouldn't learn about cause and effect. To be a physicist you must understand this universal law.

Do they appeal these kind of verdicts? With eight years given; how soon before he begins his efforts at least, for early release. . .

I'm not sure about being able to file an appeal in a case like this. There was this regarding his sentence.

Cottrell's attorneys asked for the five-year mandatory minimum sentence saying that their client has Asperger's syndrome -- a form of autism marked by impaired ability to understand social situations.

Attorneys estimated that Cottrell could spend six years in jail, including credit for time served.

I agree that others should be given stiffer senteces as well but...24 years old is NOT young and stupid. 17, 18, 19 maybe even 20 or 21. The point is he KNEW what he was doing. That's the problem with the opposition. If you don't do something their way it's the highway. They talk about debate but when it comes down to it it WILL be there way or they will ATTACK in some other manner.
He CHOSE to damage vehicles that DID NOT BELONG TO HIM. He CHOSE to damge those vehicles to get at their owners plain and simple. Maybe the sentence is too long...I don't know. However, maybe people should THINK about the harm they do to others and others possessions before doing what they do.

I'm tired of feeling sorry for the perp when it is the victim that suffers. Proves also his so called friends wern't his friends either but hoodlums cause they left him on his own. They sure turn in the end don't they? They show what they are truly made of and it isn't decency that's for sure.

This fella will have to live with what he thought he could jsut blatantly do. It's not my fault, it's not your fault, it's not the juddges fault. It is HIS FAULT.

How about no time limit, up or down, to his sentence? Instead he can be free to leave, with his rights restored, when he has made full restitution to all the victims and to the taxpayers for all court and LE costs.

Totally disagree. This is a form of domestic terrorism. We need to set a precedent that those who participate in this kind of activity will not simply be given a slap on the wrist.

give him 2-3 years only

A deuce in a minimum security camp is way too soft for this kid. He is educated and this was a politically motivated crime.

What he did was wrong but getting out at 32 is horrible.

No sympathy there. He should have considered that possibility prior to entering into the conspiracy in the first place.

yuking it up in MEX or CAN sipping martinis

My guess would be Vancouver smoking BC nugs.

eight years for a non-murder, rape, molestation.

Yeah. Arson can pull big time if you don't cooperate with the prosecution.

I'm sure their client can use this intellectual posture on his new cellmate(s). I'm sure they will be a ready audience to which this "highly intellectual" individual can spew his leftist drivel.

He will probably learn a lot about physics in prison.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure some of the lifers will give this punk a crash course in prison physics. (F)orce = (m)ass X (a)cceleration ,,,, for starters.

OMG. . .they never give up. . .

Perhaps they should have offered to accomodate him. . .put him in isolation for his entire sentence. . .

"I want nothing more than to be a physicist,"

With any luck, society will be more conservative when this butthead gets out of jail, and he'll never find a university willing to grant him a doctorate.

Hey, I can dream, can't I?

'Student'. He's 24 years old!

Just like when an 18 or 19 year old kills someone, they say, 'Teen'.

Besides, you only do 2/3's your time in most state prisons. So, you'll be out in 5 years and 4 months.

There is no parole in federal prison, and only very limited time off for good behavior. By law, he must serve a minimum of 85% of the sentence.
