If you'd like to be on or off this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.

She starts it Being fairly non-religious, I believe on alternate days in an actively participating G-d and on the others, imo to be read tongue and cheek, though I'm sure the comment's won't all be.

I recall some of the first pictures from Sumatra and the tsunami was some guy running around with a Bin Laden T shirt on.

The problem with the theory is that last time Krakatoa went off ~ and I mean really big time ~ in 538 AD it set off a planet-wide catastrophe called the DARK AGES.

This affected primarily Arien Christianity and Northern Buddhism.

It also helped bring about the creation of Islam in the next century~!

As far as the area around Krakatoa was concerned, they'd been Hindu for centuies ~ once the area started getting repopulated, this time on the two islands of Sumatra and Java (which had previously been one island), they abandoned Hinduism and adopted Islam.

Agree with both of you. The article is a load of tripe.

The author pretends to be "irreligious" but the last paragraph really reveals the true intent. I don't mind intent but I don't respect pretensions.

Also, if God really wanted to harm Islam, it would be through the heart of Islam, Mecca, not through killing a bunch of poor Indonesians.

Humor?

I usually never have a good laugh when a major volcano goes off in Indonesia!

The last paragraph?

Stay tuned to this channel, when next week we present "Unrepentant Muslims Blame Allah's Wrath on the Jews."

That's a simple fact. There have been a number of documented sermons in the Arab world blaming the tsunmi on the Jews. ??

It's something to think about. I've always felt that is why the US has prospered so and have been given one of the most beautiful countries in the world was because of our support for and protection of Israel. I fervently believe if we ever stop supporting Israel, our country will go downhill and fast.

I'd be careful thinking we can know what God does or doesn't do. Our ways are not His ways.

"the Muslim headquarters, population-wise, is not in Arabia but Asia. Specifically Indonesia, which has the most Muslims in the world in a single country. And Indonesia has been under constant onslaught by nature, perhaps initiated by the Almighty, for months."

Interesting point. But Indonesia, as a whole, is less militant than many other Muslim countries. Have there been natural disasters in the Arab Muslim countires?

The problem with the theory is that last time Krakatoa went off ~ and I mean really big time ~ in 538 AD it set off a planet-wide catastrophe called the DARK AGES.

Several scientific papers have recently debunked this; they can't find any ash layer from a Krakatau eruption in 538 AD.

However, as is typical, you'll not see a big deal made of this in the popular media or on TV documentaries.

I think this is an interesting article. And I will admit, I considered (briefly) the same train of thought after December 26, 2004. And it wouldn't be a stretch to think that some in Islam may have considered it too.

The best way to approach this is with a 'wait and see' attitude, and certainly not to ignorantly dismiss it out of hand.

Who are we to judge if God has a hand in this? How could one possibly be sure? And no, I am not Jewish.

An incredibly stupid article....

And I am seeing a pattern of natural disasters that seemed deliberately aimed at some of the main population centers of Islam.

The 8.7 quake in March basically only did damage and killed people on the Indonesian island of Nias, and nowhere else in Indonesia; Nias is unusual in Indonesia in that 90% of its population is Christian.

So, so much for the whole imbecilic theory of the article.

There is a very good website, which I check out twice daily, that lists all earthquakes around the world.

Unfortunately nothing leads to more nonsense then the uneducated staring at these maps.

In fact, most of the plagues can be attributed to a super eruption. And it just so happens that there was a super eruption at the time of the Exodus. It was on the Greek island of Thera, which is now called Santorini.

The eruption of Thera was not a "super eruption" by any standard; it was a large eruption, but it was trivially small (several hundreds times smaller) than the Yellowstone or Toba eruptions. It was only 1/4th the size of Tambora in 1815.

And Indonesia has been under constant onslaught by nature, perhaps initiated by the Almighty, for months.

Indonesia has been under constant onslaught by nature for millions of years; long before anyone there converted to Islam or there were even humans there. The volcanoes were all there long before there was Islam and there were giant tsunamis and quakes there routinely long before Islam.

The simple-minded seem to view disasters as things that specifically happen to certain groups of people; actually what has happened is certain groups of people move into areas where disasters have been occuring for millions of years.

Even before the tsunami of December 26, 2004, I had noticed an increase of earthquakes in that area. And since the tsunami, the frequency of the earthquakes has been increasing dramatically.

The author seems to not even vaguely understand the concept of "aftershocks."

On top of that, many of their volcanoes have awakened.

What actually happened is that the media has decided to give more attention to Indonesian volcanoes since 12/26/04.

At any given time 2-4 Indonesian volcanoes are erupting, and this has been true for centuries. There's nothing particularly unusual or extreme about current Indonesian volcanic activity.

I watched a program on History Ch last night that said Tambora was the 'bang' of all bangs.

???

An early day British colonist heard the booms going off and assumed there was a naval battle going on. One day later he was being pelted with ash........he was 400 miles from ground zero.

They chronicled the effect on the atmosphere / climate / crops......unbelievable.

They compared the usual 'big boom' yardsticks (# of Hiroshima size atomic bombs blast equivlient, # of cubic meter / kilometers of now missing dirt/rock, # of feet the stuff was sent into the atmosphere, etc) between Mt St Helens, Krakatoa and Tambora.

Mt St Helens, of course, was nothing more than a mere firecracker.

Tambora threw (forget # of cubic kilometers, wish I would have recorded it) the top 1/3 of the mountain 30 - MILES - into the atmosphere.

According to the program, it is active - and no one is monitoring the beast.
