I am not blaming parents

I'm not defending the mom, but before blaming anybody, I read somewhere that Sarah had returned a day early from a trip with the youth group. Is it possible that the mother did not know that her daughter was back? However, I agree 100% that a stable 2-parent family is a child's best defense. When my daughter goes away with her youth group, she is expected to stay in contact with us. And we would never leave while she's on the road! OTOH, some people don't seem to care much for their children. My husband just reminded me that, when our 4-year old was having surgery for a broken arm, a nurse told us that we could go to the movies, or the mall... but that they would appreciate it if we were back by the time he was in the recovery room. It shocked me, the idea that some parents would consider going shopping while their child is having surgery, but apparently it's not uncommon.

They should never be allowed to have total freedom once they've molested a child. At worse they should have some minimum security community. But absolutely no free reign to be near children.

It's been proven that once a pedophile, always a pedophile. Forget the 'rights' of a pedophile, think only of future innocent children being victimized.

No way.

Execution is the answer. The only answer. There will be no repeat offenders.

EXCERPT

Ashley Poston of Ruskin said she and Onstott have been dating and living together for about three months and that it had been at least four months since Onstott visited the Lunde family's home.

"I just don't believe he did it at all," the 20-year-old day care worker said. "He's not like that."

It's more likely, Poston said, that Onstott was tired and gave in to pressure by law enforcement officials to confess.

The last time Poston saw Onstott was Monday morning, when she asked him to leave. Poston said she had found out that one of Onstott's ex-girlfriends had a restraining order against him and they argued. Onstott had earlier denied that, she said.

"I told him that I didn't want to be with a liar," Poston said in a telephone interview.

Even though the couple broke up a week ago, Poston had high hopes for their relationship.

Onstott, she said, made her feel good about herself and got along well with her two children, both toddlers. He watched her children several times without incident while she went to the grocery store, she said.

Poston, who met Onstott six months ago, thought they would get back together. "I was planning on marrying this man," Poston said. "He was good to my kids. He just treated me right. He was a good man."

EXCERPTS

Before Gee announced the charges, Sarah's relatives and her church family turned out in droves to tearfully mourn the loss of the girl who'd found a safe haven at First Apostolic Church. Sarah almost never missed Sunday morning services.

Her young friends dropped to their knees and wept while her mother, siblings and a host of other relatives came to the church to support each other.

Kelly May Lunde was too shaken to talk, but her brother Larry May said: "It's devastating, it's just unbelievable."

"Everybody has things they wished they'd done -- spending more time with their children or keeping in closer contact," May said.

(snip)

Sarah had started coming to the church three years ago on her own. No other members of her family attended with her, church leaders said. So determined was she to make it to church that Sarah would often call two or three families to arrange for a ride; they'd all show up to get her.

"Every Sunday we talked about who was going to pick up Sarah," Sherry Cook said. "I can't believe we're not picking her up this morning." Fontana said other members of Sarah's youth group were taking the news of her death hard.

"I'm trying to stay composed so they stay composed," he said.

Standing at the church's altar and surveying the crowd that included about 20 of Sarah's relatives, Matt Fontana told the mourners that more than anything, Sarah had wanted to bring her friends and family to the church she loved.

"It's ironic that not until she goes to be with the Lord that she got her wish," he told the congregation.

No wonder kids are no longer kids nowadays...

They can't be. In my childhood my mother never had to give me a lecture about never ever talking to, or going with, strangers for any reason they said.

We went out on Halloween nights at dusk and stayed out for hours collecting candy and nobody worried. Now, I give my children the whole speech about strangers and we have to trail behind them on Halloween nights like other parents while they collect their traditional candy and then escort them to a Fall Festival Party.

A good time is had by all, but my point is that it isn't safe anymore for our kids.

My family and I are going on vacation to Florida in less than two weeks. We planned it long before the recent craziness started down there. We did make a small change in plans, however...

Instead of flying, we're driving. Flying would have been cheaper, since I have a friend who works at Delta and offered us his free "Buddy Passes." I'll pay high gas prices for more peace of mind. There's NO WAY I'm going unarmed.

I'm not saying Florida is worse than any other place - I'm not letting my guard down just because we're on vacation.

We are planning a trip to Ft Walton Beach in about four weeks and going unarmed never crossed my mind. Even now when some of us travel on official government business firearms accompany the traveler. Declare them in the checked bags and carry ammo in a separate one. My supervisor is almost on first name terms with the luggage inspectors in Louisville he travels armed so much. Just make certain you follow the rules where you are heading. He has letters from the attorney generals in all the states he carries to so he follows the law.
