JUST A MINUTE Minutemen Project dangerous but puts focus on immigration policy
Houston Chronicle ^ | April 7, 2005, 8:26PM | Editorial

Posted on 04/09/2005 7:03:51 AM PDT by harrowup

A Houstonian armed to the teeth stands atop his pickup truck in the Arizona desert. He wishes to deter illegal immigrants from Mexico, but he and his confederates will fail. Border Patrol officials said some civilian observers set off motion detectors, complicating rather than aiding the agency's mission.

...The organizers of the Minuteman Project say that a branch could be coming to a border area near you, including Texas. However, the anemic turnout for the first deployment suggests that the movement might soon come to a blessed standstill.

Amen.

Garbage. THat anemic turnout has proven itself to be a resounding success. You might want to tell the folks in Yuma that the movement isn't going anywhere because they are planning a similar event.

He probably had a 9mm and a pair of binoculars.

...these men and women should be praised for their initiative and taking the time and effort to make such an important point.

This is an editorial in the Houston Chronicle which I found to be far more balanced than my feelings on the matter.

I don't praise buttinskeys running a dog and pony show.

Presumably the editorial writer has seen a photo that I have not found on the electronic edition.

I saw a former FBI agent praising the minutemen on the news the other day. When asked why the government doesn't stop the minutemen he said that it's because they are within their constitutional rights to do so.

The minuteman project has proven itself to be an enormous success in so many ways. It's brought the illegal crossings to a dead stop on that sector. It's gotten a huge amount of media coverage considering the other media events of late.

From what I understand, because of the Minuteman Project, the Mexican government has put a number of troops at the border to "redirect" the illegals to other areas.

They don't want the project to be successful and they don't want the US people to know just how many are crossing each day.

What we have seen is a reduction, at least initially, of attempted crossings.

So is it working?

I suggest searching freerepublic for the stories of their success but I wouldn't count on anything from the border patrol since they're officially opposed.

The MMP has been sucessful on many fronts. The actual turnout number of participants has met the goal set by the organizers as far I have seen.

There is a problem and more people in the US are now more aware of it.

The goverment will be shamed into doing their jobs eventually.

To me it is rediculous that my cigarette lighter is more of a concern now traveling than thousands of unknowns crossing the border every day. Talk about messed up priorities!

I say it is a win win situation.

So what the hell are you doing to protect our borders. I guess Buttinskeys is the new "buzz" word for people that defend our borders when our border patrol and governement can't/wont?

Thanks.

I have been reading the links posted by backhoe here

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1380062/posts

and so far there aren't any real "successes" that I see. There are instances where the border patrol now has to not only look for illegals crossing over but monitor the "volunteers" as well.

Seems to be like adding to the burden of the Patrol agents, IMO. One step forwards, two steps back, for whose sake and name? Simcox? Savage? The fact Savage pushes it is enough to cause me to question it! The more things change, the more they stay the same. When this dies out, I doubt anyone will look back and say what a great plan it was, but I guarantee they will blame its failure on George Bush. It's chic' to do that nowadays, you know.

"Armed to the teeth" is balanced?
Setting off motion detectors "complicates" a non-existent mission?
Who writes this ****? Franz Kafka?

A slight detour, but certainly not a reduction.

Those who oppose are doing so from a seriously small minority position. Complaints about the minutemen setting off sensors is laughable since thousands of illegals apparently don't set them off. (ignoring the possibility of ACLU types setting them off).

Complaints about illegals crossing in othere areas is another sign of success because the increased illegal traffic will irritate the fence sitters in those areas.
