Amen! Bush refuses to do his constitutional duty. It is up to Congress to step up to the plate and do what needs to be done. If they don't do it, the Republican party is doomed.

IMO, the party is moving toward the middle at the expense of the loyal base, a political calculation that assumes loyalty will not change if key values are not upset. Abortion, 2A, and tax cuts have been traditional sacred cows that the republican leadership could take to the vote bank.

Immigration is a new value in the equation that they haven't sorted out yet and IMO, will be the one that causes people to realize their values are not being protected by the leadership.

Illegal immigration affects everyone. Be it the decline of wages in specific job markets,the hassle of having to deal with a store clerk who speaks poor english, or waiting for treatment for 4 hours in a hospital emergency room because 20 illegals needing primary care for their kids with runny noses and coughs got there first.

It will be the political topic of the next 4 years. I fear that the Bush/Rove calculation of engaging Syria and Iran (which needs to be done) is being counted on to keep illegal immigration off the front page and out of the voter's minds.

It's not going to work this time.

The "guns have been laid" by the mainstream media as far as the Minutemen are concerned. One incident, no matter how minor, is going to get amplified all out of proportion. I hope the Minutemen are vetting supervising their volunteers very carefully.

The one sure way for them to look bad is to have some open-border sympathizer to penetrate the group and then rough-up an illegal. The other way that I can see to sabotage the Minutemen would be from the Mexican side of the border: send over a bunch of thugs to deliberately attack a small party of Minutemen with the idea of getting them to pull their weapons.

For whatever my powers as a prognosticator are worth, I believe that uncontrolled, illegal immigration, and "the border" will be classic wedge or stealth issues in the 2006 and 2008 elections-- the side which best articulates and promotes a way of dealing with these will be unstoppable.

Unfortunately, you are completely wrong and I am a good example of why. I'm quite the conservative Christian type but I'm here in Cedar Rapids Iowa and have absolutely no knowledge of the situation at the borders. My impression, as with so many of my conservative friends, has been that they are just nice folks that want to work her in the USA. And that we would be faithless Christians not to be willing to share the wealth. Imagine the liberals at the coasts who have very little experience with immigrants. They don't even know this issue exists and will still vote their liberal principles.

Bush will be impeached when the next terrorist attack originates from the Mexican border. Two hospitals in my area went bankrupt and closed in the last year because of illegal aliens.

Well hold onto your hat but.....it is coming to your town soon. Illegal immigration is NOT just a border issue anymore. Just wait til you can't drive thru parts of your town, can't find a hospital left open, can't find a job because you do not speak spanish.
Illegals are spreading out across the country. Just look at California's stats and sit on your hands and wait til it hits Iowa, because eventually it will.

The only difference I could see immigration having in Election '08 is if it could turn California into a red state. But, for that to happen, Californians are going to have to be WAY more upset about it than in the past, AND the Republicans are going to have to nominate a winner.

I listened to an interview of the leader of the Minutemen on my way home from work last night (on Hannity's show). The vigilante comment was mentioned in a 'I wish he had said it differently' kind of way. The gentleman from the Minutemen, however, indicated that the President was behind them in this effort.
