I don't believe that could ever have happened; either co-existing in peace or rejoining on amicable and equal terms. The north and the South represent two very diverse cultures. We may share a language, a constitution, an economy, etc, but we have very different ways of approaching all of them.

Free for some, hoss, not for all.
slavery was DYING an UN-lamented natural DEATH, due to improvements in agriculture by 1860.
the 8-row, mule-drawn cotton-picker AND the "steam traction machines" (READ: TRACTORS) were the REAL end of slavery-not yankee bayonets.
absent the WBTS, slavery would have lasted a MAXIMUM of another 10 years. maybe as little as 5.
as soon as the slave owners discovered a BETTER WAY to make a PROFIT, the "peculiar institution" would have ended.
NOTE: the WBTS (IF you are dimwitted enough to believe the damnyankee propaganda about the war being a "crusade against slavery") KILLED about a MILLION PEOPLE.
KILLING a MILLION PEOPLE (and a LOT of those CORPSES were SLAVES!) to end slavery 5-10 years earlier than it would have naturally died due to industrialization, sounds like a REALLY HIGH PRICE to PAY!

Are you saying the war was fought over slavery? You've been hanging around the yankees too much.
The slaves were not free, machinery or no machinery. You are just speculating. Slavery killed the Confederacy. The abomination of slavery removed God's hand from our side. The later abomination of Jim Crow brought us the chains of federalism we enjoy today.
Because circumstances would have been different, if the Confederacy had lasted. I believe BOTH sides would have eventually realized that each needed the other, and would have rejoined on amicable and fair terms, not at gunpoint.
The Confederacy has to accept responsiblity for slavery to an extent, but Jim Crow was a direct result of Yankee Military Rule and the Freedmen's Bureau. They stirred up hatred between the races that didn't exist until Reconstruction.

How do you get a job like that?
Well, I was ex-military, recently.....when I applied for the job.
I've been to Charleston a few times but I never had time to get out to the fort. I need to make time.
My sister lives right next to Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach, NC. The state has maintained it well and it's a good park.
