You know, what's his name. The guy who said he'd work for a republican or a democrat president.

To be fair, it could be another "language" misinterpretation, such as happened with Arnold Schwarzenegger's interview with this or a similar rag. They had to back off after he came out and pointed out that he never said what they attributed to him (something about Republicans having to become more liberal).

I wouldn't be surprised if his fit of pique isn't also because Condi Rice is being so widely praised and admired for what she is doing in the job. I think that may be annoying him mightily. His sound bite sounds very much like a temper tantrum to me.

This is grotesquely unfair and unkind...

"that's what happens once you appoint/advance sombody based on color of skin and not qualities/merits etc."

... Colin Powell, I dare say, has been our BEST Secty of State for some time ... far better than the feckless Warren Christopher, or maddie "what good is the military if you cant use them (in useless nation-building)" half-bright. He's done it on merit, nothing else.

And if Powell was more 'acceptable' to foreign countries than the more blunt Rummy, well, that's what our top diplomat is for. Powell and Rummy made a great "good cop", 'bad cop' routine.

Powell has more integrity, more intelligence, and more calibrated diplomacy than most folks in Washington, DC.
Yes, he's a media manipulator, but so was white male James Baker under Reagan. Who btw was also a great secty of State.

We have since found that much of our intelligence is rotten, because the intelligence community has been in disrepair.

"remember.. this guy was promoted to be general by that peanut(brain) farmer Carter" ... he was promoted to much much more under Reagan.

NOTE the article is editorializing that Powell is 'criticizing' Bush, but this is no criticism:

"presented some positions in a perhaps overstated way, but that's how changes begin, just look at the Middle East,"

you could say "Powell praised Bush for initiating changes in the Middle East with his rhetorical calls for democracy."
that is what it really is.

Good answer. Powell's resume.... Bronze Star on up to Chairman of Joint Chiefs ...

Challenge for those crying tokenism: Powell is less qualified for secty of State than white-male liberal loon Warren Christopher, how?

Actually, the Australian gets it wrong. Powell's criticism of Bush was very mild, his primary anger was aimed at the crappy job the CIA did.

But "Powell angry with Bush" gets more Sexy-points, so that's how they titled it.

Powell ought to have simply said that we did the best we could with the information we believed. No point in criticizng anyone.

He's worried about his reputation......and we're worried about our military guys and gals.

I would like to hope so. I wouldn't trust Der Spiegal one centimeter...so you may be right that your interpretation is the correct one. Hope so.

no big deal. we know how these thing are awarded. if you have connections

Right, the son of Jamacian immigrants, a product of NYC public schools is loaded up on connections.

Does his being black bother you that much? Powell wasn't and isn't a "token" and I hoping that it's stupidity that has you thinking he is ... the alternative explanation is much less attractive.
