Well, there was a bomb blast in Beirut just a few minutes ago. No doubt Syrian agents did it.

How can this be? Europeans and leftists insist the Baath Party is secular and would never cooperate with Islamic fundamentalists.

Maybe that was just oil for food money talking.

Syria being a socialist dictatorship with no economic power to speak of, needs Lebanon as its cash cow. Having said so, however, I rather if Syria stayed in Lebanon in smaller number of troops until the Lebanese government can train and equip a large army (or national guard type troops)capable of restoring order in this Switzerland of the Middle East. I hate to see chaos in there that may lead to sectarian fights again. Thanks to Syria for controlling that blood sheds. Unfortunately, they did not push the Lebanese people to get their own troop.

Bought their story hook, line, and sinker huh? You sound like you don't know that area's history very well...No one ever accused Syria of being a liberator!

The Baath Party is secular. With the possible exception of Egypt, no state in the Middle East has come down harder on Sunni Islamic Fundamentalists than Syria (including Israel). However, it does support Hizbollah, which is a Shia fundamentalist organization aimed at Israel, rather than Syria (the Syrian elite are a branch of Shia).

As for the story, I have little doubt that the cruz if it is true, no way the Syrian hardliners are letting go of their "Greater Syria" (i.e. Lebanon), but I'd like to know how the authors got these details.

Syria is no liberator, but Lebanon is more stable than is was in the 80's, and Syria has played a part in that, like it or not. Of course, they want a stable Lebanon so that they can control it.

When we take out Iran and Syria, much of this chasing around will end. Go to the source and destroy it.

The good news is that the Reuters' "journalists" in the pay of the IDF/Mossad who are bureaued in Damascus, Teheran and Beruit, have already reported back sufficient detailed information to counter Assad's intent.

One report suggests that the Assad/Baathists actually precipitated the soccer game riot in Iran last week. The secular (socialist) and fundamentalist (fascist) friction is a lot greater than most understand and may be difficult to prevent from boiling over.

Sure, the Reuters "journalists" are expensive (and may be much more so now that the Italian communist, Sgrena, may have scored big with most of the ransom money that the murdered security agent didn't turn over) but they are worth it.

We need to take care of Syria and put Bashar Assad in the same cage that Saddam inhabits.

Thanks to your stability, numerous terrorists have been trained in Lebanon. Syria has also been stable. The USSR was very stable under Stalin.

Thank goodness that US foreign policy is no longer for worshipping stability.

This is one of the most uninformed comment I have ever seen on FR. That's ok. Just educate yourself on the intentions of Syria in Lebanon. FR is a great resource.

Syria has become a vampire, living off of the blood of Lebanon. They cannot survive their current standard of living without the constant flow of money and goods they are siphoning from that country.

Syria is moving its troops to the Beka valley, to invade Israel, and to deter suspicion when its 100,000 man terrorist army wipes out the remaining Lebanese.
