Nonexistent My Royal Irish A$$
FOR SALE ON EBAY $7.00 circa 1915
Interesting but way too long - fwd a copy to Andrew Greeley.
You've got that right!! I have one of those signs from my grandfather who lived in New York in the 20's and 30's.
During the famine, England exported grain from Ireland even as the Irish were starving.
Irish were hired for only the most menial jobs when they arrived in America; digging the Erie Canal where thousands died of fever, or bridge footers in New York where hundreds died, or the coal mines of Pennsylvania. In 1863 the draft riots were all about the Irish being drafted and sent as cannon fodder to the war instead of other immigrants.
Regards,
Yeah, I guess my grandparents were lying when they told me about the NINA signs they saw when they went for jobs....
"We'll give the land to the n---ers and the ch!nks, but NOT the Irish." - Blazing Saddles
tThose signs were primarily located in two port cities in the US Boston and New York City. Having grown up in New York just 26 miles away from the heart of New York City as a child in school we had text books and movies that showed us dozens of these signs.
We read period writings from newspapers that reflected that sentiment and there were traditions still spoken of the Irish in the 1960's
those who came over inthe Irush potato famine years had a tough row to hoe but they made it and they became model citizens alot of them became the proverbial Irish Cop
Ever wonder why in New York and other eastern cities they play bagpipe music at police funerals? Thats because the police became overwhelminging Irish and Catholic
You could call it rare if you lived in Texas or Atlanta but for thousands that poured into new york and boston those signs and prejucdices were in place and a way of life
There were also signs that no jews need apply (Less but they were there also)
no dogs, no blacks, no irish.
Additionally, the author's choice of songs to illustrate his point are full of anti-Irish stereotypes, belligerent, dim, etc.
At least you waited for a week AFTER St. Patrick's Day to publish;0)
From the article, if you had condescended to read it:
"4. Of course Ebay.com sells these signs. But they are all modern fakes, made by novelty sign makers for the Irish market. See for example http://www.bookguy.com/Irish/Books/irishem.htm Scholars can get fooled too, as shown by http://www.therblig.com/GLCSSRA/archive/901.htm"
It is really quite remarkable how most her (or seem to revel in the possibility of victimhood for the Irish) refuse to read the article or address the evidence it offers. Jensen (a conservative, btw) may be wrong but he at least deserves to be challenged on the evidence he presents.
Although most of the victims of this discrimination have passed ,many here on this site have had these stories relayed to them through their childhood.
My mother went through this stuff when she came here in 1928. And Mama never lied... and yer better not infer such !!!
This is complete and utter rubbish!
I have an Irish History book FULL of political cartoons, historic images, and other assorted historia that shows what the WASP establishment in New England (and Louisiana) though of the Irish. But then again, maybe its just an ebay fake too! Furthermore the Germans in America also had discrimination against them (especially circa WWI). But maybe this guy (jensen is it) is right, and both sets of my grandparents (one set Irish, the other German) are just full of bull. My grandfather specifically remembered there were No Catholics Need Apply signs when he was growing up, as well as No Irish Need Apply. Cheers, CSG
In San Diego there used to be signs that said, "Sailors and dogs keep off the grass." Does that count?
Jensen did specific research on ads and other historical primary sources. Which one of the *specific* pieces he offered is wrong? Heh....if this guy is all wet, you and other freepers can expose another fake in the history profession! Go for it.....if you have the evidence.
