I'm not sure what the best general solution might be. I am sure that an innocent person being put to death without trial indicates a severe error in the process of law that must be addressed.

Most doctors actually examine a patient before rendering a diagnosis, but not when that doctor ends up in Congress.

It is also true that most doctors trying to make a determination of PVS actually bother to get PET scans and MRIs and spend more than 10 minutes with the patient before rendering a diagnosis.

What's shameful is this editorial by an otherwise solid editorial page.

There are many reports from quite a number of witnesses who say that she has exhibited behavior that is contextually appropriate and not merely involuntary reflex. The judge in this case is legally blind and cannot even read briefs; they must be read to him by his clerks.

While I feel sorry for her, she has had 10 years to realize that he won't treat her any differently.

The power of the human mind to maintain itself in a state of denial is phenomenal.

We'll have to agree to disagree in this matter. I know a little about two of those witnesses and they were discredited.

As an aside, this is an interesting article about how highly the Schindlers praised Michael for years, until money became an issue.

I'm afraid there are lots of families who have relatives who are brain dead.

We're not talking about brain death here, only brain damage. I did just read recently of a woman who was brain dead, but pregnant, and her mother prevailed upon the doctors to keep the woman's body somewhat functional until the baby was developed enough to deliver. Such a situation is rare, and the machines truly were the only thing keeping some semblance of life in the body. Once the machines are turned off, that small illusion of life disappears pretty quickly. Brain dead means the brain has ceased activity. It is not the same as PVS or comatose. Terri has never been on life support, so we're NOT talking about the same thing here.

The state of Florida has legally determined that a feeding tube IS part of life support.

Stainless Steel contains iron and would affect an MRI.

The Rule of Law they cried…while Terri Died

“For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work…”
St Pauls’ second letter to the Thessalonians ___________________________________________________________

The eyes of the world watched,
As one more judge ruled for death over life

The Rule of Law they cried…while Terri Died

Who is this one who cannot speak?
She is a vegetable, of no use in this world of power and utility

The Rule of Law they cried…while Terri Died

Forget the smile; it has no productive value, disregard the mothers’ plea, misguided sentiment

The Rule of Law they cried…while Terri Died

The one on the bench, the blind guide leading the blind, has the power now in this brave new world unanchored from truth; his word is the sword

The Rule of Law they cried…while Terri Died

All this talk of religion and solidarity be damned, let the one who cast the bride aside decide

The Rule of Law they cried…while Terri Died

The triumph of the Will ascends, the meek and the weak shudder, the reign of lawlessness begins

The Rule of Law they cried…while Terri Died

Why doesn't the FDA and the Federal Government get the Hell out of the way and allow Umbilical cord and bone marrow transplants to be practiced in this country?..Both have been shown in animal and human studies(outside the US of course!) to help in neurodegenerative conditions....so this woman is being starved to death by a government that will not allow her all the treatment options there are....without her express consent on hearsay evidence...

I don't know much about MRIs but I can say with confidence that the magnetic properties of steel and iron are quite different. Sure iron is a component of steel, but it is in alloy, so it does not behave the same as pure iron.

The U.S. Senate, of course, passed the Schiavo bill ``unanimously'' on a voice vote with only three members present ...

I sensed that our Senators were trying to dodge this issue, but I'm glad to see it clarified in print.

Anyone can google PVS and see that patients appear alert.

Isn't it interesting? They appear alert, and yet the medical profession unilaterally declares they are not really alert. We don't even understand consciousness, but are so quick to decide who has it and who doesn't.

What happened to New Hampshire? Didn't it used to be a state with a real moral core? What a disgraceful editorial. Talk about a complete lack of understanding of the facts of this case.

PS- What happened to NH is that thousands of people from Massachusetts moved there to escape the high taxes and real estate prices. Hence you have a formerly Republican state that is utterly ruined.

"What happened to New Hampshire? Didn't it used to be a state with a real moral core?"

This was in the Boston Herald, not the Union Leader.

Posting mistake by me.

There are certain series of Stainless Steel are not magnetic.

The problem is that the metal would induce the flow of current and could cause even more problems.
