I appologize if this has already been noted, but the problem is not just his direction, it is the truly awful dialogue he put in the characters' mouths during the love story sequences. It was worse than the worst soap opera and destroyed whatever believability the relationship might have had.

I second that. I couldn't wipe the smirk off my face when I heard Anakin spilling his guts to Padme.

George could have been more inventive. Let's face it, when you've got the Force, and you're alone with a beautiful young former monarch...well...c'mon! Blast that PG rating. Heh Heh.

"What GL has is great, world class IMAGINATION! "

The bodily function humor with the cgi alien and the kid actor in ep I is especially charming.

"No. I think the original trilogy was great because it didn't talk down to kids. "

You have nailed it down better than I could have stated it. Apparently as Lucas took more direct control over the movies, they got worse. ROTJ started showing a lot of the 'symbolism over believability' stuff, along with burp/fart humor, cute stuff, etc.

It paints a very unflattering picture of how lucas views the world and his audience. The original SW (not the soviet-style revised version which has permanently supplanted the original) is in many ways a timeless classic.

Just curious - were you much younger when the first Star Wars series came out?

Some of us were 28 years younger, but I can't speak for everyone.
