Wait a minute! "Indian Giver" means the U.S. government broke every treaty guaranteeing territories and land claims to Indians.
White man betrayed the giving. That fact cannot be denied.
The following was my letter to President Jordan and Dr. Chantrill:
Dear Dr. Jordan:
I don't usually write comments to the University staff offering my input about various issues facing Eastern Washington University, but I do keep informed about them. Our family is quite involved in social and cultural issues, have placed a high value on education (2 Ph.D.'s, 3 Masters and 6 BA's, mostly from EWU) and think of ourselves as broadminded and pro free-speech. With this in mind I must tell you we are outraged at the possibility of Ward Churchill being given a platform to spread his message of hatred and bigotry from a tax-based institution with which we have been proudly associated. Please do all you can to keep this from happening as many of us will be affected by your decision (for better or worse). Summon the courage and integrity to put an end to this fraudulent man's self-serving aspirations and we will all stand with you and continue to support your mission for excellence in education.
Respectfully
***Amen (So be it.)
I did get a reply, somewhat terse but to the point.
Hello Mr.,
perhaps your comments would be best directed to those would choose to uphold the First Amendment and Academic Freedom only for those speakers whose opinions they share. I am a faculty member who appreciates, instead, the wisdom of Supreme Court Justice Brandeis: "If there be time to expose through discussion the falsehood and fallacies, to avert the evil by the process of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence."
If you are truly "pro free-speech," I trust you'll understand.
Thank you for your thoughtful response.
Patricia Chantrill, Ph.D.

Condescending and "terse." There is a difference between free speech and license for hate speech.
Leftists/Liberals really distort and invert the implicit meaning of the First Amendment which restricts and limits government. The first amendment does not restrict and does not limit the discretion of private individuals and entities to reject hate speech or any other speech. It is the citizens' right to not be forced to provide or support a platform for subversive radicalism and hate speech. Learned academia liberals just cannot parse the implicit rhetoric of the First Amendment! Their eyes are crossed and their minds are constipated. The government cannot restrict dissenting political speech, but any citizen may shut it out or shout it down!
Sure - guy's got paintings he needs to sell.
What a terribly written article..
I only hope somebody gets that prig's scalp on their lodge pole.
maintain low tones. I'm just joking, it's a ramones song.
As I am part Indian (see above posts), I can make such jokes.

***Aai...you are entitled, I agree. I'm an intense, melodramatic White. My Indian friends have a subtle sense of humor, benign and yet wry. I missed the irony of your statement about the cliche "Indian giver." I will try to work on more "mellow tones." It ain't easy.
The truth IS. If one misses seeing the sunrise, the sun rising is not a lie because the Truth IS the sun did rise.
Miigwech...
My Indian name is 'dances with trolls.
"My Indian name is 'dances with trolls. "
My spiritual name is "Speak truth without mellowness."
I had to look up "ramones" because I never heard that name before, and knew it was not a recognized Indian tribe. "Ramones", named after its leader, is a Punk Rock band.
Miigwech, from "She who plays Kokopelli's flute".
I wonder how many of 'his' paintings he'll bring with him for sale?
