(d) If deemed dangerous under subsection (a) or licensed as a dangerous dog under subsection (c-5), the Administrator, or his or her designee, or the Director shall order the dog to be spayed or neutered within 14 days at the owner's expense....

I really hope the animal rights wackos go nuts over this. Effectively Illinois wants to eliminate these breeds altogether and I have a serious problem with that.

There's a very nice female Rotweiler across the street, named "Angel," who tried to adopt me a fews years ago. The first time I met a Doberman was in college. I was reading a book on a Saturday afternoon when this huge male dobe came bounding into my room and immediately started making friends with me, even though neither of us had ever seen the other before. Danes are almost always very friendly, sweet dogs. The only reason I don't want one is because they have such short life spans.

This bill is garbage.

We are so lucky to live in a country where we can spend so much of our time and resources on "pets". I live in a city with 15,000 people and we have two giant pet stores.

Personally, I don't give a damn what you want to do with your animals. Licensed or not, that thing comes at me, it better be ready to deal with Man.

It's a list of dangerous dogs, not vicious ones. Have you ever dealt with a St. Bernard that thought he was meant to be a lap dog. Ooooof! That's dangerous. :-)

Unfortunately, these sorts of bills are backed by the ARs.

I have an Akita. We socialized him. We can trust him with people over 12, otherwise, we keep him away from babies and are very careful w/the prepubescent. He has gotten progressively more mellow as he ages. He has never once bitten or attacked a person. He isn't fond of most other dogs, but has never been in a fight. He is neutered.

Dogs are individuals. Large dogs and working breeds need training and socialization. They must be taught that they are beta to their humans.

These bills are about eventually not breeding, not owning and not selling any animals.

I prefer dogs to most people.

That's ridiculous. I have a Cocker Spaniel that was rescued after months on his own and HE can get nippy at times. He bit me when I was removing a potentially dangerous brittle bone from his mouth. So does HE need a special "terrorist" tag???

And speaking of "terrorists" how many have been "terrierized" by a terrier? THEY definitely deserve a bright orange tag.

Dogs who are socialized rarely harm others unless provoked. The solution is to teach people to leave other people's dogs alone and to ASK to pet them. The few people (out of the entire population of any State) who mistreat dogs so they'll fight or breed dogs to fight should have an Orange Tattoo on their forehead and be placed in a pen full of hungry lions. Just making them pay a fine or serve a short time in jail and 'telling' them to "never own another dog" doesn't work.

Judges in this Country need a reality check. And that goes for Legislators, too.

People's ability to act on their ignorance amazes me.

Princess (the Husky) would make a good gaurd dog, except for the fact that is someone broke it, she would lick them to death.

Duke (the Newfie) has been a gentle dog since we have owned him. When we got him, I was 17 and my brother was 15 and with all of our friends and girlfriends, he was socialized in a hurry....

What are these legislators smoking? Over the years we have had two German Shepherds and a Chow who were good watchdogs mostly because people are afraid of those breeds-they were always very polite when walking on a leash and even let strangers pet them. We now have a Siberian Husky whom I suppose looks wolfish and ferocious but is just a gentle baby who likes to play and sleeps with our cat who is 5 times smaller than she is. My neighbor up the road has two Rottweilers who lean on people's legs and almost knock them over. These idiots have apparently bought into all the bad press about big dogs they have ever read or heard-they need to meet the French Bulldog that belongs to another neighbor-what a mean tempered, biting little dog. This bill should be laughed right out of existance.

This is so STUPID! I love dogs & happen to own a German Shepherd & a Chow Chow. They are big babies. The only dog that has ever bitten me was a friendly, tail-wagging Collie (looked just like Lassie!). You can't judge a book - or a dog by it's cover. They're just like people, they're all different.

Aha-another Collie bite victim! I got bitten by a neighbor's Collie when I was a kid, too. It isn't the dog's breed that makes it mean, it is how the owner trains it. This bill is bulls***.

So, exactly what are these breeds? How are they defined? Must they have papers to qualify?

You see the difficulty in applying this law is defining what is covered. If you showed up at my house demanding that I comply, I'd simply ask what Great Dane? Prove he's a Great Dane. Unless you have the pedigree and most dogs don't have papers, how you going to prove what this dog is?

Oh, I know, we'll let the authorities classify the dog based upon what he looks like. IOW, we'll apply this law to 'scary looking' dogs. Now, doesn't that make you feel better. An "Assault Ban Law" for dogs. That'll work for sure.
