That Rueben Mamoulian version of 'Dr. Jekyl and Mr Hyde' with Frederic March you mentioned is fantastic. And accurate to the text. At least far more so then the insipid MGM version with Spencer Tracy ten years later (post Code).
"Psycho" hardly compares to "Taxi Driver." I made a misstatement. What I should have said was that today's movies make the oldies look rather meek by comparison. Yes, even "Psycho." I shouldn't have said there weren't questionable movies. There were. "Lolita" comes to mind. Obviously I am a movie fan. My name reveals that. But bottom line is Hollywood has really lost touch with middle America in a way that far outdistances the questionable films of the far past. And that's not a fact. It's my opinion.
If you're talking about the 1961 Kubrick film of 'Lolita', I thought it was actually rather tame compared even to the film of 'A Streetcar Named Desire' ten years earlier. Or even 'Baby Doll' five years earlier. In the novel, 'Lolita' was 12 years old. Regards.
