I find the statistics exceedingly hard to believe as well. IIRC, one of the red southern states--Alabama, if I'm not mistaken--has one abortion clinic. One. I'm willing to bet that, taken as a per capita percentage, very few red states have high abortion rates when compared to blue states. There are probably a few exceptions but still...

Oh, it's true. They think it's because of their (as Rush would say) "phony baloney, plastic banana, maggot infested, good time rock 'n roll" alleged work ethic. The truth is that it isn't them. It's red- staters at heart who just happen to live in blue states sending money to blue staters at bleeding heart who happen to live in red states. That's the kind of people you see on the gov't dime.

I don't have the state-by-state break-down for divorces, and the figures for abortions are from 2000, but as of then the statement is not true.

Massachusetts in 2000 had a rate of 21.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44, slightly above the national average of 21.3. Of the 11 former Confederate states, only Florida had a rate higher than the national average. Mississippi, South Carolina, and Arkansas all had rates less than half of the national average. Kentucky had a pretty low rate (5.3)--sometimes considered Southern although the state did not secede. Wyoming had the lowest rate (1.0).

Of course some women may have crossed state lines for an abortion so the rates may not give a fully accurate picture.

Just glancing at the CDC's 2001 "Abortion Surveillance" report it looks like Massachusetts is pretty far from the bottom of the list (using the ratio of abortions to live births).

Not surprisingly, NYC is at the top and Utah is at the bottom.
