I would also suggest reading any of Professor David Jacobs books, 'Secret Life' and 'The Threat'. Jacobs has made the study of UFOs his life work, while remaining a respected faculty member of Temple University in Philadelphia. Jacobs work is nothing to dismiss out of hand. There is none of the sensationalism, no shocking photos, but the body of work is substantial and impressive. Jacobs has a website which is worth a look if you're interested in either his work, or the UFO subject in general:

No thanks. I don't find any useful information in the whole abduction thing.
"Make-Up!"
Approx 20% of the sightings reported by reputable citizens of this country and across the world are not explainable.
Most are some kind of natural or man made phenomena. But that 20% does represent something, and until it is proven what that 20% is, your statement is a complete falsehood.
Thanks.
I don't know that this is worth bothering the UFO ping list about. What do you think?
What do the rest of you on the ping list already on this thread think about pinging the whole list--is it really worth bothering them about?
You yourself admit that 80% of UFO sightings represent "man made or natural phenomena," but my statement that "UFO reports did not represent a single phenomenon" is "a complete falsehood"?
That's the kind of logic that's gotten UFOlogy where it is today.
Was Peter walking past Dan's fax machine again recently ?
The thread hasn't gone very far yet, maybe it will - or not.
I will read the rest of the story, after I dry my eyes and get my breath back.
What's the frequency?
Upcoming Events: Peter Jennings UFO Special on TV: February 24, 2005
Guess I'm going to have to try and watch it. Will have to make a note to myself and post it on my screen!
GIVEN THE WHOOPLA and who Jennings is . . .
sure could end up with some incremental disclosures. It must be AT LEAST setting the stage for something revelatory in the not too distant future.
UFO PING LIST PING. Please let me know if you want on or off the list.
You two are are talking past each other.
Scott: Your statement is NOT accurate, in the sense that you can not prove it unless you discount the unexplained 20% of sighings.
Leatherneck: Scott's statement was not a "complete falsehood" but it was not accurate, either, as I explain above. There are indeed a number of loons out there that muddy the Ufological waters, and Scott was just a little overeager to point that out.
Eighty million Americans? That's one in three. I've lived 60 years without meeting one of these 80 million.
It's not like it never comes up in conversation. It does. I've even talked about a couple of unusual things I've seen, which should provide an opening. But no one I've talked to has ever reported anything truely mysterious.
ping
If 20% of reports involve alien spaceships, angels, Viking Kitties, or whatever, that still means that the remaining 80% involve other phenomena, such as airplanes, and weather ballons, and bright stars and planets.
If some reports represent one phenomenon, and other reports represent a different phenomenon, and still other reports represent yet another phenomenon, then the reports do not represent a single phenomenon.
I'm not sure why this is such a difficult concept to grasp.
I stand corrected and apologize
I guess I just get a bit aggravated by hearing over generalization by people who make assurances that "such and such" never happened.
It is not just on this subject, it's on any subject.
We live in a strange and wonderful world and there are many things in it that we cannot explain.
The natural and physical world does not live in a box that we define.
"I'm not sure why this is such a difficult concept to grasp."
I stand corrected. I misunderstood what you meant. You make good sense.
I thought you were referring to a SPECIFIC phenomena, namely extraterrestrial sources for sightings, not one phenomenon versus multiple phenomena.
