There are certain colorful aspects of the president's life that have not been much explored, understandably overshadowed by war and a hard-fought election. That he listens to Creedence Clearwater Revival The left is just going love making "Fortunate Son" references after reading that.

Wonder if the iPod is engraved. Silly thing to wonder, but it was the first thought I had.

I'm now in the middle of Stephen Ambrose's "Undaunted Courage" which chronicles the Lewis and Clark expedition from the perspective of Merriwether Lewis. I may not have agreed with Ambrose's politics but the guy could sure write histoy. This book is every bit as good, if not better, than Band of Brothers.

Brinkley, a biographer of John Kerry, says he thinks the Bushes reveal of themselves what is politically expedient: "He's trying to be a populist from Texas. These are people that look down on high culture." This guy is a lousy biographer and a lousy interpreter of culture and character. Reading novels and getting along with ordinary people are not mutually exclusive. The elite leftists don't have exclusive ownership of high culture. In fact it was the leftists who were chiefly responsible for today's widespread inability to discriminate between high art and pop art.
Bush and Kerry were both born with silver spoons in their mouths. Bush got over it. Kerry didn't.

Dylan never forgave Carter for never inviting him to the White House. Bob could spot a phony as well as the the best of us.

I never read fiction newer than 40 years old. There's a finite amount of time to devote to reading, and I don't want to waste my time reading something that hasn't stood the test of time. That Chernow book is on my shelf, however, and I plan to get to it as soon as I am done with the John Adams biography.

"She buys everything online," Johndroe said. Uh oh. Sounds like an addiction. (I can see a tee-shirt idea: "I was out-bid by Laura Bush on eBay.")

Personally, I like those rare times when a president has a real, authentic passion about something. This president surely does. Ask him about sports or his faith. Or freedom. They're real, authentic passion. Only the liberals that have to fake passions toward these stuffs.

"I would like to learn that he's a great reader of fiction," said Kurt Andersen, a novelist and journalist who hosts a national radio show about the arts and culture. "His view of the world seems to be black-and-white and un-nuanced." Whatever. This is the comment of a lefty ass. And I'm not just saying that because I don't care for fiction.
