As for Ali, he's down for the count.
bump for later
Hitchens BTT.
B&B.
Thanks! I love Hitch.
Guess the rope-a-dope doesn't always work...
Hitchens was on C-Span the day of the Iraq elections. At one point, he told the program's host, an Iraqi, what a privilege it was to be with him on that historic day. It's the only time I've ever seen him so emotionally moved.
Hitchens roped the dope.
Thanks for the link!
The Hitchens brothers intigue me, here's Christopher, a die hard lefty who has turned out to be one of the most intelligent and articulate supporters of Bush on the Iraq question (it should be pointed out that he also took a very principled stand against Clinton over Lewinsky which lost him alot of friends) on the other hand in the UK his brother Peter is a dyed in the wool Tory, patriotic, religious, pro death penalty anti-abortion yet he has come out strongly against the Iraq war. I wonder if they are just a couple of contrarians.
You may have a point about the brothers being natural contrarians. Interesting.
I've been lucky enough to meet Christopher Hitchens at a couple of David Horowitz' events here in LA. You could not meet a nicer, more down-to-earth person, and the brain - OMG!! Peter still lives in England and is a regular contributer to The American Conservative, totally agrees with them on the (anti) war. He looks exactly like Chris, except a little thinner and better groomed. My sense is they have a kind of prickly relationship, Chris will be leading a David H. trip to London this June, I can't go because it's too expensive and I hope to be working full time by then, but it sounds great.
Amazing that they could have this entire debate and never mention the elections in Iraq and how they may affect the perception of the Iraqis toward the Americans.
Hitchens and Dennis Miller have not moved to the right in their thinking. The policies and the pronouncements of the Liberal Establishment are so incredibly dishonest, absurd and treasonous that no one with an ounce of intellectual self respect can help but oppose them.
The people who opposed the war in Viet Nam at least had a coherent, plausible argument. (I think they were wrong and their opposition ultimately harmful, but their case was not internally self contradictory)
Likewise, I disagreed with, but understood, the claims of the anti-nuke movement. I do not have a clue what the demonstrators in Seattle or those who protest at every world trade meeting, are trying to protest.
When you see Ted Kennedy, even today after the election in Iraq, still carrying water for the enemy. You are not observing dissent and debate, you are observing treason, irrationality and evil, pure and simple.
bump!
"this is so often used as a taunt, you would have to call me a liar if you said there was no greeting of American troops. I can't actually vouch for the sweets. But I can sure vouch for the flowers. And for mass outpouring of rejoicing and welcome. I've seen it myself. I'm not going to be persuaded it didn't happen. It may be an unimportant thing; but it seems to have become a regular jeer. It did happen. I saw it myself a lot in all parts of the country."
This drives me crazy when I hear people say our troops weren't greeted with candy and flowers. Especially when those people are Freepers! We had the pictures posted here to prove it!
Stop believeing and repeating the left and MSM message. They LIE!
This discussion probably occurred late in 2004, and while the elections were something that might have come up as a future benchmark to judge where the Iraqi people actually stood, and whether our stated intentions are genuine, it didn't. If it had, Tariq would probably have said that blood would be running in the streets and Hitch may have disagreed based on what he's seen during numerous visits to Iraq. In that scenario, Hitch would (again) have won the point.
It may have been a discussion in 2004--but don't you think it odd that the upcoming elections and their effect on the future of Iraq were not discussed?
Just goes to show that pundits often don't see the forest for the trees. How they could have missed this as important is one of the vagaries of punditry.
