About the same as Fidel Castro I would imagine.

O'Neill's stuff is very awkward reading. That man had no ear for dialogue at all!

I haven't read where Miller advocated mass murder and revolution.

If he was a Communist that would seem a safe bet.

That is just my opinion from reading and hearing about him for most of my life but if I am wrong I would be happy to know it.

He was a Depression generation leftist. Many of them joined the Communist party out of misguided idealism and/or ignorance. Miller however claimed to never have done so.

So....no one should appreciate Miller's work then? LMAO.

Dear LMAO: The subject is not Miller's work but the universal refusal of the left to hold pro-Stalinists to the same standards as those who expressed admiration of Hitler in their youth. Read Johnson's NY Time obit and contrast with Miller's.

Even leftwingers like Hook and Mary McCarthy were outraged -- at the time -- by the 1949 conference which was paid for by Stalin's government.

I am almost sure he was one of those named by Elia Kazan as being fellow members of the Communist party.

I am certain he attacked those seeking to expose communists. If he later changed and attacked Communism I have never heard of it.

His communist ties do not diminish his work in anyway.

Americans who joined the Communist party in the 1930s and 40s had no idea what it was really all about. I defy you to find one interview with Miller post 1950s where he had anything positive to say about the Stalin.

I doubt if Krushchev had anything nice to say about Stalin but that doesn't mean he hated Communism or it's works of evil.

I should have said 'most' people. The Stalinist purges of the 30s were under the rug until the mid 50s.

Miller was a prophet.

A prophet of the "capitalism stinks" generation that was inflicted upon us a decade or two after "Death of a Salesman" and "The Crucible" were first performed.

Consistent with his liberal humanism and Godlessness (you'll find his name on the Celebrity Atheists List ), his works were surly, pessimistic tales which left a bad taste in the mouth. I had "The Crucible" rammed down my throat in high school. One was obliged to "tutt, tutt" and nod knowingly with the liberal Literature teacher as he pontificated on the evils of Joe McCarthy and the "rabid right" in general. Just as much an example of mindless "groupthink" as the witch hunts which Miller railed against.

Thankfully, his later offerings received little attention and he became more of a celebrity curiosity for the nostalgic due to his marriage to Marilyn Monroe.

Liberal America will miss him.

>Ridiculous to call it "art"

A guy named Harold
Cohen -- now a partner with
Raymond Kurzweil writes

computer code that
generates pictures better
than most "modern" art.

I do think The Crucible's witchcraft analogy for Communism was pretty weak. Unlike the witches in The Crucible, there really were Communists to catch in the United States. Think about how different that play might be with real witches.
