First I've heard of Thomas not being interested in the top job. That truly only leaves one choice......

This will give Kerry his chance to vote against Scalia after he voted for him.

I think Scalia is the man. Thomas is great, but maybe to quiet? Stuff Scalia down their throats.

The wacko lefties will go nuts and will put a lot of pressure on the Dems in the senate to do everything possible to block him. I welcome this fight.

Why wouldn't Thomas be interested?

I like Scalia very much, but he is in his 70-s, who knows who will be president in say 10 years, when a new Chief Justice needs to be chosen. Thomas is in his 50-s. By nominating Thomas, Bush could ensure a conservative Chief Justice for the next 30 years.

I support the Honorable Roy S.Moore-- would any of those now
on the bench stand up to the stench from the ACLU--or the
Queer Nation.DO any of them honor the Rule of Law --or the
foundaiton of our Law and Liberty as Roy S.Moore has?
Can't think of a better man to appoint Chief Justice of the
US Supreme Court And what a coup it would be if G.W. had the
gravitas-to borrow a term once loved by our enemies.

"Stuff Scalia down their throats."

That would be my second choice.

I don't know why he isn't interested, though the article indicates close friends have said so.

Given the average lifespan of black males, I suspect we'd get about the same time from either man.

The average life span of Black Men is low, because it includes the many that get killed, while young in gangs, etc.

If you took only the black males living a "normal" life, I think you would find their life expectencies being about the same, as those of white males.

I think Thomas would be a very good choice.

Everything I've ever heard is that Thomas is not well liked personally by the other justices, while Scalia is extremely well liked by everyone on the court.

What a strange observation about people's lifespans.

I wonder why that is.

I have no idea, but that's what everyone says. Scalia's best friend is actually Ruth Bader Ginsburg, their families spend Christmas and New Year's together and take a lot of vacations together. From what I've seen, Scalia has no problem separating politics from his personal life and people on both sides recognize this.

That would mean Thomas is all the more passionate about his beliefs. I don't have liberals friends either, just acquaintances.

I commenting on other poster's notion that Thomas would serve for nearly 30 years....and opposed to something much less for Scalia.

Am I wrong about average lifespan data for black vs white males?

I've heard that even Scalia and Rehnquist do not care much for Thomas personally. Remember that James Carville and Mary Matalin are married and they are both close personal friends of Rush Limbaugh, so people can have friendships with people they don't agree with. I have some liberals in my family, I just don't talk about politics with them, unless I just want to have a shouting match.

Not saying you are right or wrong... just that Thomas is an individual and basing individual lifespan on averages in political life seemed a bit far removed. That's all.

Well based on what you say, it doesn't look good for him.

True enough. I wouldn't expect W to take that factor into consideration.
