During the war, the retort was that Brits were "underpaid, undersexed, and under Ike."

Reminds me of the old saying, "No sex please. We're British."

The war is always a touchy subject. Often the debate boils down to the American saying "We won the war" and the British saying "No you bloody well did not" instead of both sides saying "Hey we kicked Hitler's ass. We rule!".

The historical fact of the matter is that, after the Battle of France, the British Empire stood alone against Nazi Germany. The Soviet Union was a Nazi ally of convenience, the French were showing the Germans their belly and the Americans had their collective heads stuck in the Isolationist sand.

It was, indeed, "Their Finest Hour".

The historical facts of the matter, however, are also that:

1. Both World War One and World War Two were European creations and, frankly, the Europeans had no right to expect any American involvement. (The Pacific War just happened to coincide in time.)

2. After General Nivelle's French Offensive of 1917, the French Army was in a state of mutiny and after General Haig's 1917 Passchendaele Offensive, the British forces had been bled dry. Without the American troops in 1918, the Allied lines would not have held. America, although late, did win World War One.

3. If not for American involvement in Europe, Western Europe and Britain would have ended up under either Nazi or Soviet rule and such rule, without American involvement in the Cold War, would most likely have continued to this day.

Fitting, as believers are the only ones who believe in the future.

Huh?

When we visited a large Church of England cathedral in rural England to attend their services, we were the only ones there except for the priest and an visiting South African choir. We were told that most church members no longer attend.

Excellent read. Thanks. I'm always amused about how others, mainly Europe, view the US. Frankly, I would like to see a well written article about how we Americans view the French, Germans and British and their elitist, arrogant, ignorant, propagandized, brainwashed public. Opppps, I just gave myself away. Only joking (sort of). ;-)

I have an acquaintance living in Europe. She believes that the continent is in a "pre-Christian state."

"Christianity has been attacked since it's inception. Our ancestors migrated to America for opportunity and religous freedom. In the "world view" Christianity is openly attacked because the principals like morality and freedom are strictly defined. Europe has dispised America since we beat back the Brits and the French and took control of our own destiny. I am sure Eurpoe has been meddling in American affairs ever since, but unlike in the past, we have the internet to inform us, where before they were just ignored by most of us."

Yes but isn't wonderful that with the age of the Internet we can now quickly compare current world views to our own? It has become increasingly clear to many for the first time how different we are from other countries. We see clearly now that we have a distinct identity that sets us apart.

No longer are we just the new melting pot of the world. We, the US, have a face and I like what I see.

British and Americans against the French....sounds good to me! Let's get the Brits to hold them down, while the Americans hose them down with SOAP and water.

The New French Left

Jean-Marie Le Pen's surprise showing brought forth France's closet radicals. Watch out Europe.

Ok. A better term for him would be Nationalist. He is linked with the British National Party hence I thought he was right wing. He is certainly bad news whatever term he goes under. He hates Jews and anyone of colour.

Well I say the Russians won the war. 80% of German military was tied up on the East front. Everybody knows that the battle for Stalingrad was the end of Nazi German.

The battle for Stalingrad started the end of Nazi German. 80% of the German soldiers was tied up on the eastern front. Dont forget that. I say the Russians contributed more than the US. The US played a major role, but not as important as the Russians

Madagascar sent 10 troops.

If it wasn't for those 10 soldiers, we never would have won WWII.

So you agree then. It was not the west front that broke Germans back, rather the East front. Long supply lines, cold weather and Stalingrad
