There is an inherent difference in how the GOP and dems respond to the president's remarks when the opposite party is in power. The GOP stands up on principle; if the dem president says something with which they agree, they do their best to support him; they stand, they clap, and they mean it. If the dem president is speaking stupidity, they don't clap or stand.

If a GOP president is speaking, the dems stand up / clap depending on how much damage it will cost them back home if they are seen not to be standing / clapping.
