Hmm, bet that's a ship with a lot of seamen.

That was a bad hit. Port side badly damaged and dome missing. Lucky to come back.

Thank God the boat and crew returned to port.

The entire circumstances of the accident may never be known -- but, in this landlubber's opinion, the captain and crew deserve recognition for saving the boat.

I see this photo is hosted at Photobucket. It's also the only photo I've seen of this sub since the accident. I'll asssume for the moment - judging by your handle - that possibly your husband sent this to you. Has the release of this photo been cleared by the DoD???

You might want to be certain of any security classification regarding this photo prior to release of it, and prior to the Navy's security folks paying you a visit, along with your husband and Jim Rob.

Notice how much fo the bow is gone. See the sounding marking "28" in the damage photo. Then compare it to the pre-damage photo where you see the same marking way back from the bow.

The old girl took a real beating---nearly 50 large and medium claber hits in a reall barroom brawl of a battle.


Most of the ship's senior officers (including the CO, CAPT Cassin Young and her embarked flag officer, Admiral Daniel Callaghan) were killed---and she was brought home by a Lieutenant Commander.

Like her sucessor, brilliant damage control and hard work saved the day.

Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf were the real naval battles of history. Too bad so few people know anything about them today.

The sonar dome is made of glass reinforced plastic (GRP), not steel like the hull. The remains were probably cut off after she moored. You can even see the bolt holes for it.

That was my concern - that they came via e-mail without the DoD "stamp of approval". I made the error of posting a similar set of photos that showed the first destroyed Abrams from Iraq prior to their official clearance, even though I posted them from another web site. The other site was in error for showing them and DoD made them take them down.
