I once had a date with a girl whose parents rented a suite at the Plaza for the semi-annual shopping expedition to NYC. With a few hours to kill I went into a bookstore and got involved in a conversation with the guy behind the counter. The conversation eventually moved out to a local bar with a bunch of employees from the store. When I looked at my watch it was 3:45 a.m.
Only in New York, kids. Only in New York.
(my best Cindy Adams)
I got into a full blown debate with a card carrying, stinking Commie.I voted, she voted, and she and I carried on the debate as we left the building and for the next few hours over tea.My then fiance got worried when I was not home when he called. He called my parents....now ALL of them were "worried".When I returned to my apartment (after winning that debate and crushing the damned RED DIAPPER BABY!),the phone was ringing and when I answered it,I was being yelled at by my beloved..."WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN,I WAS ABOUT TO CALL THE HOSPITALS!" Not a Cindy Adams story, but a true N.Y.C. story nonetheless. LOL
Those kinds of encounters are becoming increasingly rare...but they still happen. A young twenty-something kid heard me say, "We used to stay up all night, debating, talking til dawn." And he asked, "Why? What did you get out of it?" All I could answer, "Quality of life..."
That WAS what life in N.Y.C. was all about, for crying out loud. Mental stimulation! And music and dancing and going to shows and eating and,and............
It's all becoming tight, which is the best way I can describe it. The tolerance for differing opinions is approaching zero. Human interaction is increasingly done in the shorthand of pop cuture references. Too many people are unhappy with the way their lives have turned out.
What do you mean by "pop culture references"?
I'm at a cocktail party and one of the aspiring "social x-rays" looks at me and says, "You're very Quentin Tarrentino..." (SP?)
No idea what it meant.
He's some actor or director,I think.
You always seem to meet THE shallowest, silly people at parties you go to! Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!
A director who makes movies about other movies.
There are no more good parties, just gatherings of the fearful and the banal.
You need to widen the scope of your milieus! :-)
