I saw this happen, right when it happened.
Everyone is right, when they say if Bush (or Dole or Bush Sr. or Reagan or Ford) had bungled this, there would have been much merriment and contempt among the news media.....but because Kennedy (or Kerry or Gore or Clinton or Dukakis or Mundane or Carter) said it, it's not worthy of note.
Bah, humbug, Teddy--the guy with the ideology and girth of an extinct volcano.
Is this the same speech he gave today to the National Press club where he referred to the "Gobal" warming crisis.

Speaking of Kopechne...I saw part of the life of Joan Bennett who was Ted's first wife on entertainment or some show. She was beautiful, just beautiful. Unfortunately, according to the story she was smothered by the kennedys and She didn't quite have the strength that Jackie did in that Jackie could be quite aloof as to what the kennedy's were doing. If she didn't want to join in she didn't. She was her own person. Anyway, the story said after the accident on the bridge...it was DECIDED by others that Joan Bennett Kennedy was told to make a condolence call to the Kopechne family. Talk about adding insult to injury. Well, long story short, I guess Joan finally left ted. She was a beautiful, vibrant young woman when she married and I guess she just got lost in their vast numbers. Understand now though she is fine and has done well on her own. I always liked her and I continue to wish her well.

Actually, she's had a bumpy ride post-Ted. In and out of alcohol treatment, every few years there's a story on the news here (Massachusetts) of her getting pulled over for drunk driving--I recall it happening at least three times, the last not that many years ago.
Who said that drinking gin and tonic by the gallon, banging three waitresses a day and eating McDonald's hamburgers by the dozen was gonna kill you?
