I have never understood the great secrecy over a carrier's max speed. Isn't obvious to any adversary with satellite reconnaissance (most), or simply time and distance measurement? Or is the max speed something that can be sustained for only a short burst? Nuclear ships can maintain max speed till something breaks or they reach the other side of the ocean, whichever is first.

593 and 637 had a tunnel that went over the top of the reactor compartment. No equipment that I remember in the tunnels. Aft of the RC was AMS and ENG. Where did y'all keep the barbells and other training equipment?

The Torpedo room. Of course you could do pull ups, push ups, and dips for triceps in various locations in the engine room. There were also a few places away from ventilation ducts that made for a good sauna.

I think that's the Nimitz there in the second pic. You are right. It was on an Enterprise blog and was a smaller picture. I don't think they noticed either.

Deepest we got was 90+ feet with the diesel still (trying to) run. CO was pissed! I posted earlier about an EOOW that called forward wanted to know if we should load the diesel; at +400 ft / + 20 knots in transit (for the last several days)

Your NLON Badge and Pass Office story has a happier ending than mine.
I had duty there one night in between Sub School and "C" School. It was late enough in the evening that there wasn't much to do, so I was standing in the doorway chatting with the Duty Officer. We heard a loud bang, and rushed outside. In the Guard Shack, two bored Marines had been playing quick draw with their 45s. One had shot the other at a distance of about six inches. The bullet scrambled his insides without coming out. The shooter was convicted of involuntary manslaughter at his Court Martial.

All that stuff came after I left the boats. I never saw anyone doing any physical training of any sort on the boats I was on.
We did have a cocktail hour in the torpedo room. Carried MK 14's and mixed torpedo alcohal with a bit of OJ or Tomatoe juice and you had a drink before bed.
Folks may have called them 594's but I call them what they really were, 593's. I'm proud to have rode a Thresher boat.

I worked with some Naval types who told me there was "payback" over the Thresher. They won't go into details, but they weren't known as BS artist's.
Any stories?

Guided by Coast Guard and Navy vessels and protected by a Navy Seahawk chopper, the USS San Francisco slowly made its approach into Apra Harbor shortly before 3pm Monday afternoon. The nuclear submarine managed to make it to the surface and sail its way back to its homeport after running aground 350 miles south of Guam Saturday afternoon. The military also sent two more ships to assist the sub back to Guam's port.
An entourage of military ambulances, minivans and buses could be seen by air making their way to the dock to tend to the 23 injured sailors aboard the San Francisco. After nearly a day and a half en route, the sub made it home to Guam. Assessments will now begin on the damage to the submarine.

Thanks Meg. I'm reading through the threads trying to catch up. When I first read about this, it didn't sound like anything major. I was shocked to learn about the death. I didn't think any of the injuries were serious.
