Sorry to say I haven't read his novels, but I might now. From Bauhaus to Our House was a great read, and I believe, influenced Johnson in his design of the AT&T building. It got us out of "the box".

I saw the interview. It was fascinating to see his powers of observation---the little things no other man would notice. The shoes the women were wearing at a family gathering. The Beattles drove music "off the dance floor". Little things like that.
His political observations were equally intriguing.

a positive influence upon the wider culture Wolfe has an uncanny grasp of nuance that unravels the broader theme. Personally, I think you have to love and respect life as it is, to really see it.
