You should probably write more on this. I have heard of stories of one of my Granddads who came to America in 1901 at the age of One. Traveled to Montana in a wagon train. To a mining town and then back to the Midwest to later become a police man and chased down gangsters like Dillinger and the like. Almost had a chance to get that guy with Browning Automatic Machine gun.
Thats all I really now of his younger adult life. Wish I new more.
What a great life they had. My better half has a pair of mocassins made for a baby. Her grandmother or greatgrandmother was given them by an Indian woman. She and her husband had helped an Indian couple cross possibly the Platte river. She's not sure on that. Anyway her grandmother was pregnant at the time. The next morning when they said their goodbyes the Indian woman presented her with a pair of mocassins for a baby. She had made them overnight as a gift for help crossing the river. They sit in a glass display bell at home today. Quite a conversation piece.
Suggestion: Why don't you start that web page and call it "The Greatest Generation" and open it for everyone who has a story of members of that generation can tell that story. It would become a great historical research site for future generations.
What wonderful information! That is indeed an America that is withering on the vine. My maternal grandfather was originally from New Mexico, Howard Alexander Groves. We know very little about him and his family other than he had a brother. I don't even recall what his brother's name was. I need to order a certified copy of his death certificate to find out who his parents were and then start from there. His wife, my grandmother, was from Bloomfield, Iowa. He died in 1954, she died in 1976. They, too, were remarkable people. I like the idea of a site where people can talk about their grandparents!
