I agree with you. I have been to a few functions where it is normal to claim a seat or two by putting your dinner jacket on it, then mingling for a while before the show starts only to find that someone has moved your stuff or is sitting on it.
Common decency and some common sense apply, both of which are sorely lacking in todays society.
I'm not up for throwing punches, etc. That's out of line. If the people involved had started threatening violence, etc., then I would have backed off, not started a fight. If you can't win your point in a situation like that without resorting to violence, then you let it go.
