I wonder if anyone is the least bit surprised.

Pakistan, Land of the Pure, will do EXACTLY what it wants to do. Always has; always will. I hope no one thinks, for ONE moment, that they are our friends or allies.

Did that headline make anyone else do a double take?

Oh. Misreading the headline, I thought for a moment that they had released just his head.

-Misreading the headline, I thought for a moment that they had released just his head.-

Would've been a marked improvement in the situation.

Oh I don't know ... let it slip in a few Karachi watering holes (OK, juice bars) that the CIA inserted one of those navel bugs a la The Matrix and that this dude is now wired for sound. Sure he isn't gonna trip any of the scanners the AlQ guys use but when that satellite passes over, hoo boy, the JDAMs will be a homin' for Christmas! Then mention casually how quickly he spilled his guts that all the CIA needed was 8 hours. I'd like to be in the life expectancy pool on that little scenario.

Not yet. But do check this out.

Daily Times Editorial

Warrior clerics on the loose

The security agencies have reportedly freed Maulana Fazlur Rehman Khaleel after keeping him in jail for seven months. He was picked up in May earlier when charges were flying thick and fast that he was responsible for sending fighters into Afghanistan after 9/11. His old jihadi militia called Harkatul Mujahideen, was renamed after being placed under a ban, as Jamiatul Ansar. After the attempt on the life of Mr Shaukat Aziz last August, Mr Khaleel’s old ally Qari Saifullah Akhtar was arrested from one of the Gulf states and put in jail. It is interesting to note that once upon a time both were in the same jihadi outfit, the notorious Harkatul Ansar, which was the first to be banned by the United States as a terrorist group.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman Khaleel is a graduate from the Multan seminary of Deobandi clerics. He was close to Osama bin Laden when it was okay to fight in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union. His Harkat contained another leader called Maulana Masood Azhar — of the Banuri seminary in Karachi — who broke with him and established the dreaded Jaish-e-Muhammad that attacked the parliament in New Delhi in 2001. Mr Khaleel was targeted by the Americans, and some people think his “arrest” may be a “protective” measure to retain his usefulness for the jihad. That makes three warlords out in the open, the others being Hafiz Said of the old Lashkar-e-Tayba and Maulana Masood Azhar of the Jaish. All were, and remain, key players in the Kashmir jihad.

My comments - Musharraf has clearly not forsaken the idea of using Pakistani terrorist groups as tools to prod Afghanistan and India. The release of Maulana Khalil is just the latest example of how he cuts deals with homegrown terrorists, who in turn provide sanctuary to Al Qaeda.

Call Pakistan what you like, but it has been invaluable in the pursuit and capture of Al Qaeda leaders.

True. We also bankrolled Sadaam Hussein agaist Iran. We armed the asshole despot for 9 long years.
We pick strange bedfellows as allies, for our immediate purpose.

My point remains the same: I hope no one thinks, for ONE moment, that they (Pakistan) are our friends or allies. Everyone in the Gulf KNEW Hussein was an asshole. We finally found out. I just hope we don't think, for ONE single solitary moment, that Pakistan is REALLY a friend or ally.

Not really! This article exposes them completely. They have no real interest in curbing extremism. They just wantto make it look like they are doing something about it and we will bribe them with whatever they want like F16's!

They have done nothing to reform the schools or open the airwaves so foreign media can be seen there. In otherwords they have made ZERO progress towards an open tolerant civilized society. There are no shared values here. The military junta will keep them indoctrinated to keep recieving the bribes.

Pakistan is also virulently anti-Christian.
Their tiny 1% can't, by law, for example, rise in the economic strata past a certain point. Christians are excluded and are slowly be driven out.

No secret to that. It just further illustrates that Pakistan has its own agenda and we only fit into it now because we are, WITHOUT DOUBT, bribing the holy pie outta them.

What is laughable is that THEY also have nukes, but we seem okay with that. Iran can't have nukes but these crazies in Asia can. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. But that show biz, I know. Really--NO shared values.
