I suppose that this is what happens when really really intelligent people try to explain things without God, spirituality, and sin. Maybe Smeagol would have adjusted quite normally after murdering (perhaps) his only friend if he had just had a better hobbit's diet. What would today's secular psychologists recommend? I think a diet of prescription drugs to dope out that annoying voice of conscience would be the doctors' order. What did Freud use on his patients? Cocaine?

Heaven forbid that secular psychologists accept the fact that J.R.R. Tolkien was a very devout Catholic! That Smeagol forgot the taste of bread and the sound of trees is nothing short of Grace giving Sacraments that 1) keeps us sane and 2) reconciles us back into the fold should we fall to sin (and we do fall oh so often). But no no! Not that nasty elves' food! Let Smeagol diet on beer and vitamins from things that grow!

I recommend Lt Col Dave Grossman's explanations for those post traumatic stress disorders due to killing/murder. Maybe learning from subjects that dwell and die in combat will rigidly enforce reality into air-conditioned office dwelling doctors & psychologists. There's little time and margin for error for being wrong about questioning God's existence when your existence may very well end without a moment's notice.

P.S. Aren't psychologists still high on the suicide watch list? I heard it from "The Ninth Configuration".

In true secularlist spirit, these folks feel the need to explain away the fact that it was the Ring, carrying a large portion of Sauron's evil, that drove Gollum.

Of course, they can always put out a press release saying there is a consensus, and peer reviewed articles passed around their group have supported the preponderance of evidence that shows no metaphysical evil affected Gollum--it was all due to poor diet and a misunderstanding of society.

Just goes to show what a genius J.R.R. Tolkien was. Not only did he create an entire alternative world but he made it believable. Not only did he research extensively the timelines in his novels (ensuring that full moons occured at the proper intervals for example) but he took into consideration what Gollum's personality would be like if he had a diet of nothing but fish. Pure genius.
