Here are some rather well written but kooky articles about Chitral

I am just reporting what they said. I thought it was understood that the truth was most probably just the opposite.

Why don't you read all my posts. Obviously the CIA wouldn't be there if they thought Bin Laden wasn't!

Then I posted maps of the region--would I do this if I thought this was just a tourist destination???

I also wrote on my first post, "This is it."

Would I say that if I didn't think Bin Laden was there???

Jeeesh!

Thanks for the links. Chitral looks like a neat place to visit if you are young, healthy and into hiking.

This beautiful region could be a real money-maker for Pakistan and the locals.

This article appeared in September, but I'll say this; their claim about Chitrol may be right. About this time I saw Bush beaming like the cat that ate the canary. Maybe they have Bin Laden. That said, this is a Russian media source. I don't know that it's particularly reliable.

Osama bin Laden has been captured in Pakistan?
(02.09.2004)---This is September 2, 2004

We have received reports from US sources that Pakistani security forces have captured Osama bin Laden.

According to these sources, bin Laden was captured not far from Chitral in the Northern part of Pakistan (between Chitral and Peshawar), approximately 4 weeks ago.

This has not yet been confirmed, but we are told the information comes from a source that has provided reliable reports in the past.

We received a report almost 2 weeks ago suggesting that two high level Al-Qaeda operatives were being held in Pakistan and it was believed that their capture was to be announced to coincide with the Republican convention. Whether one of these is Osama bin Laden is uncertain.

According to the US sources, the capture of the "Big Fish" will not be officially announced until sometime next month, in what is sure to be "Headline" news throughout the world.

If the information is correct, it will help bring some "closure" to the 9/11 terrorist attack and bring to justice the worlds most wanted terrorist.

Osama bin Laden has not been seen for some time and there have been many reports of his death since the 9/11 attack, although recordings of his voice have been reported quite recently.

Whilst his capture would certainly put and end to a long running hunt and mystery, it would also raise a few questions as to why this has not already been announced. Although the US government have played down bin Laden's present importance in Al-Qaeda, there can be no denying that he is still the man they have wanted to catch for almost 3 years.

Hopefully, official confirmation on this will be available shortly, so that we can determine whether these are simply rumours or fact. We certainly hope the news is true, but we shall be keeping the champagne on ice for a little while longer, just in case.

HEre is the follow-up on the September article from the same Russian media source. They are a bit conspiracy-minded. I wouldn't give it too much credibility.

Osama bin Laden a "Guest" in Pakistan
(15.12.2004)

Pakistan have rejected the conclusion by the C.I.A. that Osama bin Laden is hiding in the Chitral region of Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan.

We published a report many months ago saying that bin Laden had been captured in this region, but the information was to be released later. Our sources, who have American "connections", were fairly sure of their information at the time.

However, a few weeks ago, we received an update on this and it appears that his "capture" is more like a "house arrest". Only a limited number of people are aware of the arrangement and even less know his exact location.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, is probably being truthful when he says "We do not know any whereabouts of Osama", he most likely doesn't know.

Reports that the C.I.A. have established bases in the region where bin Laden is supposed to be "hiding", have been denied by Pakistani officials. However, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao also said that there was no question of "carrying out a search operation for him by the U.S. forces on our territory"

One thing is certain, apart from the fact that bin Laden is not hiding out in some cave, is that some very high level government officials are providing protection for him and this involvement would appear to include the US in some way.

From the limited information we have, it would seem that although Osama bin Laden has a certain amount of freedom, the forces that "protect" him, are also there to prevent him from "moving" elsewhere and having any independent contact with the rest of the world.

Our guess, and it is only a guess, is that bin Laden has been of some "help" in the past and continues to carry out "favours" in exchange for his limited freedom. If this is true, then he has knowledge that might be very damaging to certain governments and for this reason he can not be allowed to come into contact with the outside world.

This may explain why bin Laden appeared on a very timely video just before the election (rather than in person) and why the message was "unusual".

The real truth behind Osama bin Laden and the 9/11 attack is probably more explosive than the JFK assassination, but if anything happens to bin Laden, the truth will die with him. The American public and the rest of the world will have to accept that bin Laden will never be brought to justice, nor will the powerful people that have helped him. This also explains why one man has been so successful in "avoiding capture" for more than 3 years and why certain people have held back from even searching for him.

Unfortunately for bin Laden, the moment he longer becomes "useful" is the day his protection ends. This time may be close, and only then will we see him, but not alive!

"And once every month, or probably once every two months, he walks 15 miles to another ruin somewhere where he meets with somebody, and then he walks back 15 miles. He doesn't have an HF modem, he doesn't have a satellite TV, DVD, he probably doesn't have any kind of radio."

He'd obviously seen Farenhiet 911 before delivering his Kerry campaign commercial just before the election.

Pakistan Denies C.I.A. Is There Seeking bin Laden
By SALMAN MASOOD

SLAMABAD, Pakistan, Dec. 13 - Pakistani officials on Monday denied a report about the presence of a Central Intelligence Agency search mission for the terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in their country, and they rejected the agency's conclusion that he was hiding in Pakistan's northwestern tribal area near the border with Afghanistan.

The New York Times reported Monday that American officials had said that the C.I.A. had established a series of small covert bases in the semiautonomous tribal area of Pakistan in late 2003 and concluded that Mr. bin Laden was being sheltered there by local tribesmen and foreign militants. The officials also said the effort was being hindered by strict supervision from Pakistani officials.

But Pakistan strongly rejected those assertions in news briefings on Monday. "We do not know any whereabouts of Osama, nor is there any question of carrying out a search operation for him by the U.S. forces on our territory," said Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao.

In a separate briefing, Masood Khan, a Foreign Office spokesman, said, "Osama bin Laden has not been sighted in Chitral or any other part of Pakistan," referring to the mountainous northwestern tribal area.

On a recent trip to Latin America and the United States, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's president, announced that Mr. bin Laden's trail had gone cold, and said that his government had broken the back of the Qaeda network in Pakistan.

The strong reaction is a testimony of the balancing act officials in Pakistan must perform in their cooperation with the United States in its hunt for members of Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Pakistani officials and political analysts say that any American military operation or a public admission of presence of American troops on its territory would aggravate the anti-United States feelings in the country and destabilize a fractious political environment.

Cross border dacoits raid Badugal village

CHITRAL,15 Nov 04: A group of Afghan nationals from Kunar province raided a Pakistani village Badugal and decamped with 70 heads of goats and kidnapped its shepherd. The raid is said to be for the second time within a short span of one month. The village is situated at a distance of 40 kms from the Arandu border. The looters allegedly entered the village with heavy arms. The locals could not challenge them being unarmed. in the previous raid last month, the same group had snatched with 18 heads of goats. According to some locals, the incidents are the results of rivalry between two brothers living on both sides. Bin Laden may be living in Chitral, says US official

CHITRAL,26 Nov 04: (Monitoring desk) Osama Bin Laden, terrorist to many, hero to many others, certainly the most wanted man in the world is still speculated to be alive and living in some unexpected place. 'Yahoo News' has carried an interview of Maj Gen Eric Olson Deputy commander of the American forces in Afghanistan. Excerpt from the news story reads:-

"Here's what I think," said a senior military official. "I think somewhere up in the mountains in Chitral, Bin Laden lives in a house and lives with a family, and probably one bodyguard.

"And once every month, or probably once every two months, he walks 15 miles to another ruin somewhere where he meets with somebody, and then he walks back 15 miles. He doesn't have an HF modem, he doesn't have a satellite TV, DVD, he probably doesn't have any kind of radio."

"And that's probably the life he leads," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity...Read complete story at http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1512&ncid=731&e=2&u=/afp/20041124

Maybe it is CIA people more than the military. Just my impression.

These are one in the same (today) - 85% of those hunting UBL with the CIA are simply on "loan" or "borrowed assets" from the SOF community -

From the NY Post -

January 4, 2005 -- WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence agencies have expanded the search for Osama bin Laden to Pakistani and Afghan cities after analysts became convinced he has moved from the mountains to an urban environment, The Post has learned.

Officials said they still have no solid leads as to the whereabouts of the al Qaeda leader, whose last confirmed sighting was in the battle of Tora Bora in December 2001.

But counterterrorism officials said the shift from the remote mountainous badlands along the Afghan-Pakistan border — which has been the central focus of a three-year manhunt — to more urban areas was prompted by new intelligence analysis of the three most recent bin Laden video and audio taped messages.

A task force assigned to capture or kill bin Laden is made up of U.S. Special Operations commandos, CIA spies and FBI agents.

"Bin Laden lives in a house and lives with a family"

this is exactly what Bodansky has been saying for months - that he lives as part of a regular family, there is no security detail around him that would make him easy to spot. that all his communications are done by courier.

The town of Chitral is not what I'd call an urban environment; still, some people have TV, computers, and so on. There are schools and even Islamic schools in the area.
Having a video camera is no big deal.

I don't see why Osama couldn't make some film in Chitral.

Of course, he is more noticeable in a small community.

He could be living in a house in the mountains and coming down to make tapes in a car if someone picked him up.
There are a lot of tour guides up there with jeeps and four-wheel-drive vans.

The film had some backdrop/screen behind Osama. It could be any place. Hard to tell with the backdrop.

I sure wish they would get him and Zarqawi. They are killing a lot of Iraqis and not a few Americans.
