Hmmmm? I wonder if Pataki sees that running against Spitzer is going to be a tough road to hoe.

How fellow Conservatives - how about abolishing the damned office? We did not need it during WW2 and we don't need it now. It is another federal program we can be without.

This wouldn't be a bad fit for Pataki. It would effectively eliminate him from running for President in 2008 - which ain't all bad. It would also help redeem the indignity that NY suffered with Kerik...

Just my thoughts...

I'm probably retiring at the end of this year, so as far as I'm personally concerned New York can go to hell in a handbasket if that's what they choose.

Talk about taxation without representation. If you work in New York but live out of state, you pay FULL New York State taxes--the same for non-residents as for residents--but get no benefits in return, and don't get to vote there.

Pataki is certainly an improvement over his predecessors. He's basically been a do-nothing governor, which is all to the good, because the alternative would have been to spend even more money on grandiose projects. It's not called the Empire State for nothing. Most of it's governors have been under the illusion that they were emperors.

Are there really any qualifications to be the Director of Homeland Security, other than the ability to get in front of a podium and say "the security level has just been raised to orange"?

I don't believe all these leaks (especially the idiotic Lieberman notion), but having said that, I gained a lot of respect for Pataki during his speech at the RNC when he ripped the clinton administration:

Speech

You know the history. Osama bin Laden declared war on America -- and then came the attacks -- the first World Trade Center, the embassies, the USS Cole -- hundreds dead, thousands injured.

How I wish the administration at that time, in those years had done something.

How I wished they had moved to protect us -- But — they — didn't — do -it.

On September 11th Al Qaeda attacked again. But this time they made a terrible mistake.

There’s one thing they didn’t bank on.

They didn’t bank on George W. Bush.

He didn’t run from history. He faced it.
