It may be Smart, but it ain't pretty.
The only thing uglier would be the remains of those unfortunate souls inside it after being hit on the highway. There's a reason it gets such high gas mileage. Technology is only a part of it. The other part has something to do with it being slightly less heavy and sturdy than a cardboard box.
Could you send us a link to the Slashdot article?
I suspect there are at least a few people whose curiosity has been aroused :-).
Many thanks.

I have heard of a couple of stories from the pits of World Motorcyle and F1 racing events in Europe, where some rider or driver shows up in one of these small cars, and when it is left unattended the pit crew of rival teams pick the thing up and put it in some improbable loaction where it just cannot be driven away, or carry it inside some place like a restaurant. It appears with 5 or 6 strong men you can pick it up and move it about pretty easily.
Oh, look. It's smiling. Awwwwwww, isn't it cute!
They look terribly impractical in a wreck. They might be safer than a bicycle.
I've seen these in Europe and thought them funny enough to take photos of.
You may not even notice when you run over one of them in your SUV.
When the weather is good I go on two wheels (of course I would have no better chance in an micro-car against an SUV than I would have with a bike).
I agree with ya, it would be great to just drive to work by myself or driving around town.
It should be a little safer than a bike, I guess.
That car improved my shifting more then any vehicle before or since. Sychros were gone, had to heal and toe every downshift. With that monster engine you had to downshift to get over a speed bump. Also reverse was borken so we flintstoned reverse, which was never a problem.
I kinda miss that car.
Thanks, that's important these days.
Smart cars make Minis look like Cadillac Escalades!
That car is so gay. It'll probably be a hit in SF.
"a clause in NAFTA that allows any car approved for Canadian sale to be allowed into the United States."
Do you have a reference for that clause? I'd love to be able to get a Toyota Land Cruiser HJ-75 (long wheelbase, 2-door utility Cruiser - think "Crocodile Hunter") into the USA!
There also are many cars that are not available in the US driving merrily around.
VW's Lupo (smaller version of the Golf) gets 78 mpg but it is is a diesel and the enviros hate diesel. It is a new diesel with the direct rail injection which is much cleaner. A test version of the Lupo drove circumnavigated the globe in 80 days, averaging 99 miles per gallon of fuel.
The little car will also do 102 mph and it is not that small. It will also run on biodiesel.

VW Polo TDI gets 78 mpg

The Polo is just a bit smaller than the Golf.
What's that? It is German. VW?
Here is a 99 mpg VW.
