I've read that the military will not accept people who have been on any medication for psychiatric problems, including Ritalin for ADD. Don't know if that's true (I would think they might have had to modify that policy, given the huge percentage of schoolchildren who've been put on the stuff in recent years).
I'm here as a contractor with TCFRBDC (think about it...LOL) and they pay me quite well as a procurement expediter/international traffic, which is also my background in "The Real World." I've met some of the people who have come over with the government on short-term contracts and they seemed happy with their deals, too.
I've been here nearly a year and will be starting a second one next month. The money's great and the experience is fascinating. Very difficult at times, but fascinating just the same. The good outweighs the bad in my own perspective. I'm having the time of my life.
"There are lots and lots of successful service members with ADHD."
Thanks! I continue to be amazed at the things I know NOTHING about!! And Freepers like you keep educating me!
Good question. Of course, when I joined (couple of decades ago) it wasn't a popular diagnosis and I am really just self diagnosed. I do know my son was disqualified from USMA because of ADHD, but it was waverable under certain conditions. And those standards are not equal to regular enlistment standards. I don't know what the medical standards are, but I'll bet if you haven't been on meds it won't have much to do with enlistment.
I think you can only be disqualified for Ritalin use.
