By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID take at least one prescription drug and one-in-six takes at least three, the government reported Thursday.
"Americans are taking medicines that lower cholesterol and reduce the threat of heart disease, that help lift people out of debilitating depressions, and that keep diabetes in check," Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said in a statement.
The annual report on Americans' health found that just over 44 percent of all Americans take at least one prescription drug, and 16.5 percent take at least three.
Those rates were up from 39 percent and 12 percent between 1988 and 1994, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
The report, "Health, United States 2004," presents the latest data collected by CBC, the National Center for Health Statistics and dozens of other Federal health agencies, academic and professional health associations, and international health organizations.
Americans' life expectancy increased to 77.3 years in 2002, a record. And deaths from heart disease, cancer and stroke - the nation's three leading killers - are all down 1 percent to 3 percent, the analysis said.
If our drugs were suddenly cut off - what would happen?
I hate taking pills, and avoid it at all costs.
I'd be having a lot less sex.
"ADD" children would have personalities.
I have to, but it's only one (I am epileptic) and it's cheap.
Yeah, I always thought they should have Xanax bars. That would be an interesting social scene.
And meanwhile, I swallow half a pharmacy a day, just to keep operating.

BC pills?
My fiance requires em, her natural cycle is brutal and from what I understand, painful.
So, I'm glad that we do have our drugs.
There's too many brand names out there, I get em all confuzzled.
Because I don't, you must assume that I'm depressed, have high blood pressure, am anxious, and my blood sugar swings widely. Pretty scary for someone who packs heat, eh?!!?
My husband would have an asthma attack and drop dead in front of me.
LOL I pack heat, too. Scary, eh? I won't take an aspirin or anything else, but I've tried skipping the phenobarbitol with bad, bad results.
You noticed that too, eh?
Flip through an issue of Popular Mechanics, not one drug ad. Pick up the woman's Redbook or what not, and a pharmacist would have an orgasm.
Oh the entire womens magazine industry is bought and paid for by Big Pharm.
Not only the ads, but the articles as well. It never fails that there will be at least one or two articles re health. Thus, the chance to bring up a "great new medicine" that helps the condition. It's sickening really. What can i take for that?
We can thank 911 for that. The gains from popping pills is slim to none (with the exception of a few specific diseases).
