Interesting speculations. My one cent, as I don't even have 2 cents worth:

Miller didn't need Simmons to save her rep via this story; she was already rehabilitated by the first part of the Plame investigation.

I would guess that Miller was identified as one of the leakees by a source government employees who has testified, and that is why she was questioned, but if that is so, her refusal to testify to protect sources must relate to some other source, who has not yet revealed themselves.

It is possible, even likely, that Simmons knew GRF was being investigated before the raid. There might have been previous witness or document subpoenas to GRF that would have made that plain. So he might have suspected a raid was a possibility, but probably didn't know for sure. However, it seems the raid was supposed to have been a surprise. Foreknowledge could only come from someone in the government. It's strange that the NYT would know about the raid before hand.

What I don't get is how this fits into the tug of war between the White House and the anti-Bush faction at the CIA. Does the new cooperation between CIA and FBI include CIA foreknowledge of domestic law enforcement raids? If so, how does the tip benefit either side of that fight? And if the leak was part of that struggle, what signficance is there, if any, to the tip going to Judith Miller, if it did, as opposed to, say, Walter Pincus? Bear in mind we are up on a pyramid of inferences now, and are probably on the wrong track.

Regards,

Dear Buckhead,

Thanks for your one cents worth!

It is very hard to know what the truth is here.

It is scary to think that any American would reveal
law enforcement information where Al Qaeda might be involved.

Judith Miller has written several books.

One is called GERMS and is about biological weapons.

She also wrote SADDAM HUSSEIN AND THE CRISIS IN THE GULF with Dr. Laurie Mylroie.

Recently her partner in this book has been criticized for promoting the Iraq war.

Dr. Mylroie has written books that claim that Saddam was behind 9-11. She has also written articles saying whom she suspects in the Anthrax case. These are on the Internet.

Her book is pretty good, and she has a background in Middle Eastern Studies, but the government has never said that Saddam was behind 9-11.
