I believe that their planning number for contributing to this project is on the order of $10 billion over some number of years, but it has been a while since I looked, and I could be way off.

Unless it is just the same syndrome that liberals always exhibit. If a conservative suggests it, go against it. They are so full of anger and hatred that they just can't bring themselves to agree with President Bush, no matter what.
My first reaction to that stat was "Is it really that low?" If the "pro" Canadians are really 28%, that can't be much more than the real conservative element in the US.

I'm not sure about the amount of resistance in the US. I haven't really followed it much.
I just know that when something is suggested by President Bush, the same bunch always has the same knee-jerk reaction. They think the US is bossing everyone around, just because they are the only super power, we don't have to do everything just because they want us to, blah, blah.
Just stop, think, and do what is in the best interest of the country. If it happens to be in line with what President Bush and America would like...big stupid deal.

There is obviously resistance from the usual suspects but missile defense is generally popular.
