If someone wants to hang around until closing time, hoping that there will be leftover food, why not sell it half price rather than throw it away?

Because rather than buy it at full-price at 9PM, the same customer will come in at 10PM and buy it for half-price. My wife's seen it happen. I suppose you could float the price, but that would probably cost the supermarket more than it saved.

The supermarket has been dumping a lot of Krispy Kreme donuts lately at half-price though. Can't afford to throw away a lot of $6 boxes.

Right, but my point is that the grocery makes a certain number of loaves of bread every day. Let's say, 100 during the week, and 200 on the weekends. And sometimes they sell all the bread, and sometimes they don't.

In the ideal world, the store would know that on Tuesdays, only make 95 loaves, not 100, but they can't know that ahead of time.

Which makes better economic sense, to sell the last few loaves half price, or throw them away?

They can't.

Expiration dates and trial lawyers prevent that.

While that's true, they could sell or give away excess products to food pantries 1 or 2 days before expiration date and probably not be hassled.

Our cup runneth over.

Our trash bins contain an amazing amount of stuff which amount to luxuries for much of the world.

Thanks to litigation, our excess abundance must be sent to rot lest someone - knowingly consuming/using "trash" and the associated risks - might come to harm and legal aid.

Yes, FNB and freegans are a bit odd and their energies better spent elsewhere. So long as they and those "downstream" know the risks, it's fine by me.

So it's kinda icky to some. Others don't have the luxury of pristine food.
So it's kinda wierd to some. To each their own; it's a free country.
The only outrage I can see here is the lengths to which society will go (jail, razor wire, lawsuits) to prevent dumpster diving.

Well, their politics are a bit out of whack, but they're doing a very good deed and they aren't hurting anyone.

Good for them.

I just couldn't help thinking about maggots. Even if you are taking fresh stuff from that day, there has to be maggots in those dumpsters.

Only in America is voluntary poverty assumed by these self-righteous idiots. In college, I had to work two jobs to support my first husband and myself. I saw all the people protesting and smoking pot (this guy doesn't want to work hard writing papers and studying) but I couldn't afford to join these lazy idle kids. Now my second husband and I are thriving quite well under capitalism, thank you very much, and support our local soup kitchen, homeless organization and halfway house, as well as lots of other charities. These kids could get off their lazy asses, build themselves a life and do the same.

And as far as torture by the police--real torture is having your neck hacked off by Iraqui thugs who glorify in videotaping it while hiding their disgusting faces.

"He grew up near Rice University" So? Are we to believe that a few stray intelligence and knowledge rays eminating from the university grounds were absorbed by this hapless dude because of his proximity? Jeez, if I'd only known that actually GOING to a university wasn't required, that merely LIVING next to one was all the qualification I'd need to prove my education to the world, why I could have saved tens of thousands of dollars in tuition & books!

So, once upon a time, was Adolph Hitler!

He was a vegatarian. He passed strict anti-smoking laws. He pushed gun control measures. He was not pro-life. He was anti-semetic. He'd probably feel right at home in the Democratic party of today.
